Dave Marcis, who has made
only two appearances on the
Winston Cup circuit during the
second half of the 1977 cam
paign, will be on hand Sunday to
defend his crown during the 18th
annual Dixie 500 at Atlanta
International Raceway.
Marcis, however, will be in
the No. 81 Chevrolet Laguna
owned by William Monaghan
instead of the Harry Hyde
Dodge that took him to victory a
year ago or the CAM 2 Mercury
that he campaigned in during
the first half of this season.
“If I didn’t think the car was
competitive, I wouldn’t be in
it,” said Marcis, who will drive
under the Osterlund Enterprise
banner in 1978. “The Monaghan
car is well-built and I know it
can be competitive.
“We will have a new engine in
it plus we are taking it over to
Banjo’s (Matthews) to have a
new chasis put under it,” added
Marcis. “Plus, I love to run
Atlanta and I think I’ve got half
the battle won with that fact.”
The Wausau, Wise., native
stunned many of his fellow
competitors last year when he
slipped into victory lane during
the Dixie 500 for his third win of
1976. During the off season, he
gave up his ride in the Hyde
prepared Dodge and was named
chauffeur of the Roger Penske
entry. Penske, however, cur
tailed his Grand National
ventures during the second half
of the season..
“I especially wanted to run in
the Dixie,” said Marcis. “You
always have a special feeling
for the tracks you’ve won at. I
really love to drive the track ..

Carlton easily tops John
in Cy Young Award voting

AP Sports Writer
NEW YORK (AP) - Steve
Carlton, the left-hander who
parlayed power and finesse into
23 victories for the Philadelphia
Phillies in 1977, was named
winner of the Cy Young Award
today as the National League’s
outstanding pitcher.
It was the second time Carl
ton has won the honor, awarded
annually to the outstanding
pitcher in each league after a
vote of a committee of members
of the Baseball Writers
Association of America, two
from each league city. He also
won it in 1972.
Carlton, the major leagues’
winningest pitcher who com
piled a 23-10 record in leading
the Phillies to the East Division
title, was an easy winner in the
Cy Young balloting, receiving
17 of 24 first-place votes and 104
points.
Tommy John of the West Di
vision champion Los Angeles
Dodgers was second with 54
points, including three first-

the first part of the season and
Dec. 30 and 31 and Jan. 1 and 2.
The same dates for either sex
hunts also apply in Butts.
Elbert, Heard, Henry, Lamar,
Meriwether, Newton, Pike,
Troup and Upson Counties.
The statewide archery season
closed on Oct. 29 and no archery
hunting will be permitted
during the gun season.
Other counties in game zone 3
opening for deer hunting
Saturday are: Barrow, Greene,

Pike faces Taylor’s
scoring machine
The Pike County Pirates will
face a tough test Friday night
when Taylor County comes to
town.
Scores of previous games
indicate Taylor County has a
good offense and a stingy
defense.
Taylor has shutout three
opponents this season. In those
shutouts, the Taylor County
offense put 145 points on the
scoreboard.
The offense has scored no
fewer than 3 touchdowns in any
game and the defense has
allowed only 3 touchdowns in
two games.
The only loss of the season for
the Taylor Countians came the
second week of the season when
they were edged 20-19 by
Douglass of Montezuma.

Healthy Bartkowski
to start Sunday
ATLANTA (AP) - Steve
Bartkowski, healthy again after
a series of injuries, will be the
starting quarterback Sunday
when the Atlanta Falcons host
the San Francisco 49ers.
“It was time to make the
change,” Coach Leeman Ben
nett said Tuesday, explaining
his decision to return Bar
tkowski to the No. 1 signal-call
er’s spot with the Falcons.
Bartkowski, Atlanta’s No. 1
draft choice from the Univer
sity of California three years
ago, was sidelined all this sea
son by a knee injury before he
entered last Sunday’s 14-7 loss
to Minnesota and threw an in
terception in the waning min
utes of the game.
Scott Hunter had quarter-
place votes. Tom Seaver of Cin
cinnati and Rick Reuschel of
Chicago tied for third with 18
points each, Seaver getting two
first-place votes and Reuschel
one.
Others receiving votes were
Pittsburgh’s John Candelaria,
17 points and one first-place
mention, and Chicago’s Bruce
Sutter, a relief pitcher, five
points.
Five points are awarded for a
first-place vote, three for a sec
ond and one for a third.
The American League Cy
Young Award winner, an
nounced last week, was relief
pitcher Sparky Lyle of the world
champion New York Yankees.
The 32-year-old Carlton is the
sixth pitcher in baseball history
to win the Cy Young Award
more than once. Seaver, Sandy
Koufax and Jim Palmer, each
have won it three times, Bob
Gibson won it twice and Denny
McLain won it once and shared
it once. The award was in
stituted in 1956, and in 1967 the
baseball writers began making
Morgan, Oconee, Oglethorpe,
Rockdale and Walton.
Closed Counties in game zone
3 include Clayton, Cobb, Fulton
and DeKalb.
The deer season also will be
opening Saturday in many of
the other game zones in the
state.
No dog hunting is permitted in
game zone 3, but is permitted in
some south Georgia counties.
Hunters should check on the
opening and closing dates in
other zones before hunting in
them. The either sex hunt dates
also vary in other zones.
this year’s Dixie will be his final

Tri-County, 28-7; Truetlen
County, 44-15; Woodbury, 54-0;
Upson, 66-14; and East Coweta,
32-14.
While the Taylor County
offense has amassed 354 points,
the defense has been holding
opponents to only 89 points, 29
more than the Pike County
offense has been able to
generate.
The Taylor offense is
averaging 39.9 points per game
and the defense is giving up only
9.9 points per game.

get the award “from September
on. He was pitching that well.
He won some big games for
me.”
After winning 27 games in
1972, Carlton tailed off to three
mediocre seasons — 13-20,16-13,
15-14 — in Ozark’s first three
years as manager of the Phils.
But last year he bounced back
to 20-7, and he topped that this
summer.
Ozark attributes the come
back to the Phils’ reacquisition
late in 1975 of veteran Tim
McCarver, who has become
Carlton’s designated catcher.
As his designated catcher,
McCarver was perhaps more
familiar with Carlton’s mound
work than anyone else.
“The big guy used to over
power the hitters with that hop
ping fast ball,” he said. “Now
he still overpowers them, but he
also gets them out with finesse.
It makes no difference what he
throws. He can get them all
over the plate, and that’s why
he’s such a great pitcher.”

Injury may be
O.J.’s miracle
By DAN SEWELL
Associated Press Writer
BUFFALO (AP) - A de
pressed O.J. Simpson said four
weeks ago that “it will take a
miracle” for him to achieve his
greatest goal — to play in a Su
per Bowl.
His Buffalo Bills teammates
think that miracle may have
come in the form of an injured
knee.
After the Bills’ humiliating 56-
17 loss to the seattie Seahawks
Sunday, Simpson’s left knee,
ailing for three weeks, was
examined by two Los Angeles
specialists. Tuesday the Bills
announced that Simpson will
undergo surgery for cartilage
damage early next week and
will miss the remainder of the
season.
Some of his teammates feel
he has played his last game as a
Bill, but may turn up in the
uniform of a National Football
League contender next season.
“Luckily the injury wasn’t a
serious thing. It won’t end his
career," said Joe DeLamiel
leure, an All-Pro lineman and a
team leader.
DeLamielleure noted that it’s
no secret Simpson would wel
come a trade to a contender and
that Simpson might be more
excited about coming back next
season if he were traded.
“I see no reason why they
should keep him. It’s going to be
a rebuilding process here that’s
going to take a few years. He
deserves a chance to play in a
Super Bowl. We’d all like to see
it,” he said.
Reggie McKenzie, offensive
lineman and a close friend of
Simpson, indicated on his
morning radio show that Simp
son would not return as a Bill.
Wide receiver Bobby Chan
dler said, “There is a feeling
that he might not be back, but
nothing was said as such. But
the definite feeling is there.”
Last season Simpson asked
for a trade to the West Coast,
preferably the Los Angeles
Rams, but the Bills’ asking
price was reportedly too high.
Simpson signed a three-year
contract, then began simmering
as the Bills finished 2-12 last
year and lost six of their first
seven games this season.
Before the Seattle game
Simpson said he was more frus
trated than at any point in his
career and offered another
round of criticism aimed at the
Bills’ management, which he
said has not helped the team
through trades.
He concluded, “I just want to
get my years over and get out of
here.”
In a statement Tuesday,
Simpson said he would make no
decision about his future until
after his recovery.
"That’s a subject I can’t deal
with right now. I have another
year on my contract with the
Buffalo Bills,” he said.
