Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D.
Consult another doctor
By Lamb, M.D.
DEAR DR. LAMB-Please
tell me what I can do next
with my problems. I have
diabetes and my blood sugar
is 281 with 4 plus urine. My
blood pressure is 190 over
120.
My doctor is giving me
Tolinase, four tablets a day
and for blood pressure two
tablets a day of Hydrodiuril
and two tablets of Aldomet.
This medication is not help
ing and my doctor isn’t very
nice about it and has me
very worried.
I watch my diet and I am
not a salt eater. I have many
problems and I worry about
everything, especially about
my urine. My mouth tastes
somewhat like salt.
Please tell me what I
could take that will help me.
What could 1 take for that 4
plus urine sugar? I do not
care for my doctor.
DEAR READER-I don’t
know your wieght or your
age. If you are overweight it
is very important that you
lose weight both to lower
your blood glucose levels
and to lower your blood
pressure.
I think you should go to
another doctor. When a pa
tient isn’t happy with his or
her doctor it is really better
for all concerned to change
doctors. You will probably
do better with one you like.
No one can clear your
urine of sugar, though, until
your blood sugar (glucose)
level comes down. When
ever the blood glucose level
is over 170 there is usually
some spilled into the urine.
As a person gets older the
kidneys change and the
blood level may be higher
without a positive urine test.
That is one reason why blood
tests are done at intervals.
Some diabetic specialists
might wish to put you on
insulin if you have associ
ated kidney damage-which

Shellac may yellow wood
* .<» -
By Holly Cramer
POLLY'S PROBLEM
DEAR POLLY - I have blue and white panels in
my kitchen and they have turned yellow-looking even
though I put shellac on them. I have tried using
cleaners but nothing has worked and they stay yellow
looking. I wonder if you or any of the readers can
suggest anything else I could use. — BARB.
DEAR BARB—I presume these panels are wood
since you shellacked them. I have an idea that the
shellac may have caused the yellow look. Did you
use colorless or clear shellac? How about this,
readers?—POLLY.
DEAR POLLY—When I make a chocolate cream pie I
use a cornflake crust instead of one made with graham
crackers. I think the pie has added zest and flavor and, of
course, the good part is that one does not bake it. I use one
cup crushed cornflakes, one-fourth cup sugar and one-third
cup butter. Press in a nine-inch pie plate and chill. I use
homemade pudding for the filling but instant will do.—
DIANA.
DEAR READERS—Mrs. J.A.’s question concerning her
nonstick cookware brought an answer from the company
that invented and manufactures this widely used product.
We hope their answer will help not only Mrs. J.A. but the
other readers who may have the same problem:
What may look like the finish scraping off may only be
staining or spotting which can result in sticking and a
charred buildup of food or grease residues. This can be
reduced or removed by the following home remedy: Mix
one tablespoon chlorine bleach and one tablespoon
vinegar with one cup of water, simmer for five to ten
minutes and then remove from the stove. (Polly’s note-Of
course, this is done in the pan in question.l
Wash, rinse and dry thoroughly and then condition the
pan with a thin coating of cooking oil or shortening before
using again. This may improve the non-stick qualities on
such pans.—POLLY
Polly will send you one ot ner signed thank-you
newspaper coupon clippers if she uses your favoite
Pointer, Peeve or Problem in her column. Write POLLY’S

may be the case with your
high blood pressure -partic
ularly if you are not
overweight. Insulin is com
monly used if dietary man
agement fails to result in
adequately controlled levels
of blood glucose.
Incidentally I would like to
have sent you The Health

letter did not have your
return address on it. All
readers who want a reply
should be sure their address

DEAR DR LAMB-I have
heard that cholesterol does
not become a problem no
matter how much cholester
ol-containing food is ingest
ed,if sugar is omitted from
the diet. If this is so, would
you please explain the role
of sugar in cholesterol build
up?
DEAR READER-No, it is
not true at all. If you are
eating too many calories of
any kind and food containing
cholesterol you may signifi
cantly increase your choles
terol level. This has been
observed on some of the so
called magic reducing diets
that limit carbohydrates but
advocate foods rich in cho
lesterol and fat.
It is true, however, that if
you do not restrict your
calories from all sources
enough to eliminate or pre
vent obesity you will not be
very successful in lowering
your cholesterol, even if you
limit the foods that contain
cholesterol in your diet.
