Miniature space suit allows
David to leave plastic bubble
HOUSTON (AP) — Six-year
old David, the boy in the plastic
bubble, now can look out his
window and walk hospital corri
dors. Better yet, he can antici
pate visits to the zoo, walks on
grassy paths and seeing what he
wants to see most of all —a big,
red fire engine.

the Johnson Space Center, Da
vid will be able to leave the
bubble that has protected him
from germs and bacteria all his
life.
David, whose last name has
never been revealed, has a con
dition known as severe com
bined immune deficiency. His
body has no defense against
disease, and what would be the
sniffles for a normal child could
be death for David.
Officials of the Baylor College
of Medicine and the Johnson
Space Center displayed the suit
and its portable backup system
on Thursday.
The system has allowed Da
vid to sit a desk with his teacher
and play pitch with a rubber
ball with his 9-year-old sister.
Hospital, NASA has developed a germ-free suit called the
Mobile Isolator System that allows David outside the
‘bubble’ for the first time. (AP)
Bullock farmers
plan protest
STATESBORO, Ga. (AP) -
Farmers from Bulloch County
planned a protest rally here to
day to dramatize their unhappi
ness over low prices.
An estimated 2,000 tractors
were expected to roll from the
county fairgrounds through the
streets of Statesboro to the
county courthouse in an eight
-10-mile-long “tractorcade.”
Nearly all the town’s busi
nessmen said they would close
their establishments for four
hours to show support for the
farmers.
The farmers are protesting
low government support prices
for agricultural products as
well as delays in processing
federal loan applications for
farmers hit by last summer’s
crop-damaging drought.
Despite nationwide efforts to
organize a farmers’ strike, local
organizers say they are not part
David stood up and said,
“Well, let’s take a walk,” the
first time he crawled down the
eight-foot long tube from his
bubble into the space suit.
The suit, a spinoff from the
Apollo lunar missions, is made
of rubberized non-porous fabric
similiar to that used in life rafts.
For added protection, it is
covered with actual space suit
of any formal group.
Greg Suhler, a Colorado
farmer and member of the
newly formed American Agri
culture Movement, was in
Statesboro for the rally. He de
scribed the group as “not an
organization as such — just a
bunch of farmers.”
Inexperience
EATONTOWN, N.J. (AP) —
Two men who tried to rob the
City Federal Savings and Loan
Association may not have had
much experience. Or they may
just have been nervous.
A man with a woman’s stock
ing over his head walked in
Thursday, police said, pulled a
,38-caliber revolver and ordered
tellers to fill his bag with mon
ey.
Then the alarm went off.
The gunman pumped a bullet
through the ceiling, ran out the
front door and jumped into a
stolen car driven by his accom
plice.
The two sped to the end of a
parking lot, police said, but the
car caught on fire and they ran
off.

Southern Airways
files court action
ATLANTA (AP) — Southern
Airways has filed the 10th of a
series of court actions claiming
the Federal Aviation Adminis
tration and the National Weath
er Service contributed to the
April 4 crash of a DC9 jet which
killed 72 persons.
The plane, en route from
Huntsville, Ala., to Atlanta,
crashed in the tiny northwest
Georgia town of New Hope as
the pilot tried to land the plane,
which was without power in
both engines, on a road during
severe wind, rain and hail.
A spokesman for Southern
said the latest court action was
filed Thursday in U.S. District
Court.
“The result of Southern’s ac
tions could be payment by the
U.S. government of any claims
against Southern resulting from
the accident in light of the liti
gation pending,” the airline’s
statement said.
Millions of dollars in claims
have been filed against South
ern; McDonnell Douglas Corp.,
manufacturer of the airplane;
and United Technologies Corp.,
manufacturer of the engines.
In its latest move, Southern
made the government a third
party defendant and indicated
that the government ought to be
made liable for all or at least
part of the multimillion dollar
claims.
The airline claims that the
National Weather Service was
negligent in gathering and pro
viding information about
weather conditions.
It claims also that the FAA
twice for 2% hours, once for
three hours.
“This is an important feature
in the cultural enrichment of the
boy,” said Dr. Buford Nichols,
David’s attending physician.
“He is now learning the con
cepts of space, developing
physical skills which cannot be
done within the bubble and is
advancing the education for this
very bright young child.”
“certified the JTBD7 engine
without testing or requiring
tests to ascertain if the engine
was capable of operating safely
in hail, wind or rain condi
tions.”
The FAA also was accused of
not assigning a single air traffic
controller to the stricken air
craft.
Witnesses indicated at a Na
tional Transportation Safety
Board hearing on the crash last
June that severe weather warn
ings were known by the weather
service, the FAA and the air
craft dispatch station of
Southern Airways,
But some of the information
was not received by the pilot
and co-pilot of the aircraft, they
said.
Testimony also showed that
Southern, like most airlines,
relies on its own weather oper
ation rather than on the federal
government to supply informa
tion directly to pilots.

Nichols said there is hope Da

The suit cost $20,000 to devel

Lockheed,
union
not talking
MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - No
further talks have been sched
uled between striking machin
ists and Lockheed-Georgia Co.
after negotiations were re
cessed Thursday because of a
lack of progress.
A federal mediator Wednes
day had called together repre
sentatives of the company and
the International Association of
Machinists and Aerospace
Workers Local 709.
The meeting was the first of
the bargaining committee since
the strike began Oct. 19.
The Thursday meeting was
recessed because “no marked
progress was made,” and no
further talks were scheduled, a
company spokesman said.
About 4,600 workers at the as
sembly plant joined a strike of
fellow union members at Lock
heed’s West Coast plants which
began Oct. 3.
Another 350 union employees
also struck at Lockheed parts
plants in Charleston, S.C.; Me
ridian, Miss., and Clarksburg,
