Fat counts in diets
By Mwrence I.a mb. M.D.
DEAR DR. LAMB-My
friend and I have recently
joined a club to lose weight
a lot of weight, and we are
supposed to count our calo
ries and keep a record of all
foods we eat.
How much do you count
for fats in a meal? 1 cut all
fats, trim my meats, and
stopped using butter, Crisco
and margarine, along with
cutting out my sugar and
sweets. My friend contends
that sweets are enough to
omit, that the fats don’t
make that much difference.
She and her family live on
hamburgers and french
fries, fried chicken, pizza
with sausage and that type
of food. They all have upset
stomachs and diarrhea and
all are overweight and ner
vous. Will you comment
please?
DEAR READER -The
facts are that there are nine
calories in one gram of fat,
and about four calories in a
gram of carbohydrates or
protein. Even worse, fat tis
sue contains less water than
muscle (lean) or the bulky
vegetables and fruits. The
water content affects the
calorie count also.
Sugar contains a lot of
calories because it contains
almost no water. It is dehy
drated and refined beet or
cane juice. Usually the best
place to cut calories from a
diet is to eliminate all the fat
that you can and eliminate
the concentrated sweets
such as sugar, candies,
syrups, jellies and the like.
There will be some fat in
almost all foods. Even fresh
fruit contains a small
amount of fat. There is fat in
corn-hence corn oil--and
some in most vegetables.
But these amounts of fat are
small compared to the
amounts found in high fat
foods, such as untrimmed
pork chops, cold cuts, pro
cessed or cured cheese and
the like.
To diet properly you really

Repellent boot problem
By Polly Cramer
POLLY’S PROBLEM
DEAR POLLY - After I recently purchased a pair
of fashion boots I learned they were not water
repellent. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I
could put on them to at least keep some water off? -
G.H.M.
DEAR G.H.M. - A water repellent silicone can be
bought at most shoe repair shops and comes in either
a spray can or to be put on with a daub. I was told this
works on most materials that are used for making
boots except plastics. — POLLY.
DEAR POLLY - Like everything else, dry cleaning is
now so expensive but I have discovered a neat little trick
that cuts down on the number of trips to the cleaner. I put a
little of that well-known liquid cold water wash for fine
garments and wool on a clean cloth and rub spots lightly
and carefully. I can wipe away a spot or freshen the neck of
a dress or blouse without leaving a circle on the fabric. Os
course, do test your material first but I have found this
most helpful when used with a little good judgment. —
SALLIE.
DEAR POLLY - My Pet Peeve concerns foil pans that
one buys at the store. They come in every imaginable size
but there are no sectioned ones for TV dinners. Many of us
who take meals to invalids or shut-ins, or live alone would
like to have these so we could make our own from
leftovers. I do not buy TV dinners and do not have any
friends who do, so I cannot save them to reuse. There
seems no way to get them. I do hope they will start to offer
these pans to the retail trade. - MABEL.
DEAR POLLY - A favorite pointer of mine came from a
friend who works at the studios here in California. I
remarked that older women cannot see too well, and when
they use black or dark eyebrow pencils it looks terrible. It
not'only emphasizes the wrinkles but looks clownish. She
suggested always using a soft lead pencil. I find this blends
in and one need not use too much pressure to put it on. I
know because I just turned 73. — POLI.

need to have an idea of the
actual calorie count of vari
ous foods you eat, whether
the calories are from
starches, sweets, fat, or pro

want this diet can send 50
cents with a long, stamped,
self-addressed envelope for
it to me in care of this

to exercise while dieting. It
will help a lot.
DEAR DR. LAMB-I have
been taking vitamins A, B, C
and D for a year now. A
nurse told me if I took
vitamin E I would not need
A, B, C and D. My doctor
says take a multiple vitamin
mixture which includes A,
B, C and D. What do you
recommend?
DEAR READER-I rec
ommend following the ad
vice you paid your doctor
for.
You have either
misquoted the nurse or she
knows almost nothing about
nutrition. Vitamin E has
none of the important func
tions of A, B, C and D.
Vitamins have different pur
poses in the metabolic sys
tem. If you don’t get enough
vitamin C you get scurvy. If
you were seriously deficient
in D you would get rickets.
Vitamin E doesn’t prevent
either. In fact, vitamin E is a
vitamin in search of a dis
ease. There is no known
human disease caused by a
lack of vitamin E.
I think people should try to
get all their vitamins and
minerals from a well-bal
anced diet. But for those who
do not eat properly for one
reason or another, or have
an increased need for vita
mins, then an inexpensive
all-purpose vitamin capsule
that contains the Recom
mended Daily Dietary Al
lowance values is the best
solution.
