Judge says verdict is signal from battered women
LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A
judge says the qualified acquit
tal of a woman accused of mur
dering the ex-husband who beat
her is a signal to the world that
thousands of battered women
are “crying for help.”
An Ingham County Circuit
Court jury of 10 women and two
men deliberated 6% hours
Thursday to reach a verdict of
innocent by reason of insanity
for Francine Hughes.
Afterward, presiding Judge
Ray Hotchkiss said the deci
sion’s immediate impact may
be to “turn up a little fire under
this fog to enunciate to the
world that there is a problem
here.”

Mrs. Hughes, 30, was charged
with first-degree murder in the
death of James Hughes, a 31-

worker who died March 9 in a
fire at his ex-wife’s home in
Dansville.
Mrs. Hughes claimed she was
temporarily insane when she lit
gasoline she had poured under
the bed where Hughes slept. She
also contended the death was in
self-defense of years of beatings
by her husband.

Flu reported
in Daytona
ATLANTA (AP) — Influenza
was reported at Daytona, Fla.,
today by the national Center for
Disease Control—the first cases
of the current flu season in the
United States.
The CDC said three residents
of Daytona who returned Oct. 1
from a Caribbean cruise which
touched at Puerto Rico devel
oped A-Texas flu.
The CDC said last spring that
this virus had been reported
first at Lackland Air Force
Base, Tex., and later in Alaska
and that if the United States saw
outbreaks of influenza this
winter, the virus likely would be
A-Texas.
The so-called flu season usu
ally is considered from some
time in the fall through the
winter, depending on the course
the disease takes.
The CDC said last week that
influenza was confirmed in
eight cities in Puerto Rico.
Tests of the three Daytona,
Fla., cases at first appeared to
be dengue fever, because the
symptoms are similar to those
of influenza.
However, further tests

As the verdict was read, Mrs.
Hughes’ sobs stilled a gasp from
the spectators jammed into the
tiny courtroom. For a moment,
she clutched court-appointed
defense attorney Aryon
Greydanus then broke free to
stride to her four children sit
ting in the front row.
The children reached across
the railing to caress their moth
er’s hair and kiss her face. The
family had to be separated be-
showed they suffered A-Texas
flu, the CDC said.
The A-Texas virus is consid
ered a "drift” from A-Victoria
flu, one of the two predominant
flu viruses which caused out
breaks in the United States last
winter.
A-Texas is the fourth vari
ation of A-Hong Kong influenza,
which has been identified in the
United States since 1968. Others
besides A-Victoria are A-New
England and A-Port Chalmers.
Florida was among the first
states to report influenza last
winter when an outbreak of A-
Victoria was reported in a
nursing home in Dade County.
The CDC said A-Texas is not
related to A-New Jersey, or
swine flu. There were only a few
cases of swine flu reported last
winter—all associated with
swine fanning.
More than 46 million persons
received swine flu vaccine un
der a government-sponsored
program last year. Although all
unused swine flu vaccine has
been stored, there is no govern
ment program available this
year.

These are and should be in
dependent boards free of the
pressures of politics and subject
only to the desires of the people.
However, I think their operation
could be strengthened if
mandatory reports on a regular

to jail.
Lawrence Hughes, brother of
the slain man, said as he left the
courtroom: “I just can’t believe
the verdict. That’s all.”
Greyanus said he believed the
verdict is a landmark one.
“This is a precedent-setting
decision,” he told the cheering
and applauding crowd. “I think
she will be free tomorrow and I
think she will be free from now
on."
