Griffin runners get set
for Callaway marathon
Long distance runners Dick
Slade and Richard Raleigh of
Griffin plan to participate in the
marathon race Saturday at
Callaway Gardens. It will be
sanctioned by the AAU and
those who qualify by completing
the course in required times will
be eligible to run in the famed
Boston Marathon.
The Callaway Marathon will
be 26 miles plus 385 yards which
is the regular “marathon”
requirement. At Callaway this
will be about three times around
the scenic drive at the gardens.
It is expected to attract 300 to
500 entrants and will start at 10
a.m.
Slade, who is a Griffin realtor,
said that preparing for a
marthon requires about 60
miles of running a week for
eight weeks. During the actual
marathon, he said, runners
reach a point somewhere
around 18 miles or more where
acid stops flowing in the blood.
This is called “the collapse
point” and eliminates those who
cannot continue. Those who can
keep running do it “on pins and
needles,” Slade said.
Raleigh is employed at
Southern States in Hampton and
makes his home in Griffin.
