HEALTH Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D. I Gas can be controlled By Lawrence Lamb, M.D. DEAR DR. LAMB-I’ve had trouble with gas on my stomach for about a year now. My doctor says I eat too fast. I have always been a slow eater. I do not have a problem with constipation but do have trouble passing gas and having a bowel move ment. I don’t think it’s what I eat; it’s anything, about an hour after I eat anything. It’s very uncomfortable, and my stomach makes very loud noises which are very embarrassing. I’ve told my doctor this, too. My stomach doesn’t hurt, just swells until I do have a bowel movement. Is there anything you can tell me that will help? DEAR READER—This is a fairly common complaint. Every one has some gas or air in the digestive system. You can’t eat or drink with out swallowing some air. The way a person eats can add to swallowing air. Most people pa&s the air they swallow readily and they are not even aware that it has happened. Others have real problems with it—at least 10 percent of the population. Fermentation in the diges tive system is another cause for gas. The classic example here is mature bean seeds. They contain a triple sugar that cannot be broken down by digestion and this car bohydrate ferments releas ing gas. This also happens in people who cannot digest lactose, the double sugar in milk. These people find that milk and milk products are a major cause of gas and sometimes more distressing symptoms. I am sending you The Health Letter number 6-8, Controlling Gaseousness, which will give you a com plete review of the various POLLY'S POINTERS Polly Cramer fFI J 1 Smoke stains are a problem By Polly Cramer POLLY’S PROBLEM DEAR POLLY - I recently purchased a lovely home but the flagstone fireplace is stained with smoke, some apparently spilled liquor and seems greasy where someone probably roasted franks in the fireplace. I hope you or some of the readers of your fine column will tell me how to remove these stains without damaging the flagstones. - Mr. G.G., Jr. DEAR MR. G.G., JR. - You really have problems. Some authorities suggest cleaning smoke stained stone fireplaces as follows. Add four ounces yellow laundry soap to enough hot water to make a quart of soft soap. Heat until soap dissolves, cool and then stir in one-half pound powdered pumice stone and one half cup household ammonia. After mixing well use to scrub stones with a stiff brush. Use a clean brush to apply another coat and leave on about fiftßen minutes, scrub off with brush and clean warm water. Rinse with more clear warm water. Test first just to be sure of effects on your particular stone. Perhaps this will also remove those various other spots. - POLLY. DEAR POLLY - N.M.B. wrote how she stores he embroidery floss in pill containers so I want to tell the other readers how I keep mine in a small manual type book, about five by seven and a half inches, that has about 75 pages in it. Each color is kept on a separate page and different shades of that color on the adjoining pages. I store this book and its contents in a candy box in which I also put my embroidery needles with the needle most recently used stuck in the corner of the book. If the box is large enough embroidery hoops and scissors can also be stored in it so everything is quickly available when one wants to embroider. - HAZEL. DEAR POLLY -1 open up empty waxed cardboard milk cartons, fill them not quite full of water and then freeze. I usually have several on hand and use them to line the bottom of our cooler when it is used for a picnic or on the boat. This keeps the food nice and cool and such a block of ice lasts much longer than small ice cubes. - NANCY. (NEWSPAPER ENTERPRISE ASSN.) WINTHROP ■» Qi* C™Hi ( Dlp^nt£ VEmE 'l I I 1 J ! ‘WaM&S? Others who want this infor mation can send 50 cents with a long, stamped, self addressed envelope for it to me in care of this newspa per, P.O. Box 1551, Radio City Station, New York, NY 10019. By following a few simple rules, you may be able to help yourself. You can identify whether or not you swallow air, and per haps break the habit. The loud noises you de scribe in your stomach are caused by forceful contrac tions of your digestive sys tem. The whole tube from mouth to rectum contains a middle layer of muscles that contract and relax to move the food along for digestion. The over-active bowel sounds suggests that you may have some element of a spastic colon. When the co lon goes into spasm from the over-contraction of the mus cles in it, the spasm shuts off the opening. The food, liq uid, and gas behind the spasm is literally trapped, and nothing will happen un til the spasm is relieved. This can cause severe pain either from the spasm which acts like a muscle cramp or from distention and stretch ing caused by the trapped gas. It doesn’t matter whether the gas is from swallowed air, fermentation or both. It hurts just as bad. That suggests that you may need some treatment for spastic colon. One of your best helps here is to add bulk in the form of cereal fiber as found in bran foods. Also try to establish regular habits. I am sending you The Health Letter number 2-*4, Spastic or Irritable Colon, to give you more information on what to do about an over active colon. (NEWSPAPER ENTERPRISE ASSN.) FRANK AND ERNEST b ?
