Illinois — Griffin Daily News Monday, November 14,1977 Outdoorsman Some try spoon jigging for bass By BILL BAAB The Augusta Chronicle AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - In the fall, most Georgia sportsmen’s fancies turn to hunting. Most of them go hunting perhaps, but not all of them. Some try their hand at spoon jigging for bass. Main ingredients needed for a most enjoyable time include a large body of water, like Clark Hill Lake, a depth-sounder of the flashing variety, a boat, a favorite rod and reel and an as sortment of lures especially de signed for jigging in up to 50 feet of water. Clark Hill anglers prefer such lures as the two-fifths ounce Little Cleo spoon, the Hopkins 75 spoon with red and bucktail adorning its treble hooks or the Little George Tailspinner. They are heavy enough to get to the action quickly. As the outside air turns cris py-cold, bass in the Southeast’s big-water reservoirs bunch up and move to the bottom of deep water areas such as submerged creek beds and river channels. There, they “hover,” just above the bottom in water 50 feet or more deep. The only way in which to lo cate these fish is to use a depth sounder of the flasher type. It has a clock-like face and is usu ally numbered from 0 to 60. A steady light flash at zero shows the constant surface while an other light moves clockwise around the scale, indicate the depth of water. Intermittent light flashes be tween the two lights usually in dicate fish. The thinner the light flashes, the smaller the schools of fish. Once the fisherman locates Due to national TV advertising campaign, we need to add 3 sales ladies to our staff. Many company benefits, permanent positions, earning opportunities of S2OO per week. Say, for example, fish are shown on the depth finder sus pended at 35 feet in 40 feet of water. Just let the lure fall freely to the bottom, but not too fast. Keep some control over the fall so if a bass should sock the lure on its way down, you can react by putting the reel in gear quickly and striking upward as hard as you can. If the lure settles to the bot tom with no interference, reel it up to the 35 foot level quickly — it is more or less a “guessti mate” on your part, as to when to stop reeling — and jig or yoyo the lure up and down. Do this by pointing the rod tip skyward and then letting it fall, all the time keeping the line taut enough so that you can feel the sharp tap of the bass’s strike as the lure settles. Most strikes will come on the fall. The fish is apparently de luded into thinking the flutter ing lure is an injured baitfish. You may miss the fish on the first two or three strikes, but once you get the timing of it it’s easy. Clark Hill spoon jiggers like their way of finding the fall fishing action because they nev er know what they’re going to wind up with once they drop the lure overboard. On one recent trip, two an glers wound up with two. crappies of better than two pounds apiece, several white bass, a few hybirds (the white bass-striped bass man-made combination) a channel catfish, and their limits of largemouth bass. There are a few things to learn while searching for schools of bass that can pay off when no schools show up on the depth finder screen. Depth finders normally are not used to locate fish, but to find fish habitat, such as log jams, brush piles, rocky bot toms and the like. If such habitat is observed on the depth finder —once you own and use one for a while, the light patterns indicating such habitat are easy to identify — stop and jig a while. Sometimes, you’ll be re warded with an extra-heavy bass or perhaps a school of fish is just off a brush pile and just out of your depth-finder’s range. How do you keep your boat in such an area? Use an electric motor. By placing your depth finder where you can keep an eye on it while fishing, you can easily tell when you move off an area. Once you find a hot spot, line up your position visually by checking landmarks ashore, or buoys. You also can use an anchored floating marker. Occasionally, a school of bass suspended just off the bottom in water 20 to 30 feet deep won’t touch a jigging lure. So try casting four-inch plastic worms and even standard six and eight inch worms and you may be pleasantly surprised. The art of spoon jigging can be used all winter, depending on how cold it gets.
