Quit smoking, added weight
By Lawrence Lamb, M.D.
DEAR DR. LAMB—I
would like your advice. I am
5 feet 5 and weigh 126
pounds. That sounds fine,
but I gained eight pounds in
four months which all went
on my thighs and buttocks.
The weight gain occurred
because I stopped smoking
10 months ago. I had smoked
33 years, and am quite proud
of myself as I stopped com
pletely in one day and
haven’t had the desire since
but I want to eat constantly.
A month ago, I started
walking a mile a day and put
myself on a diet, not a crash
diet, but a sensible one of
1200 calories. In a month’s
time, I put on a couple more
pounds. A few days ago, I
found out why. I thought that
if a half grapefruit was good
for you, grapefruit juice
(unsweetened) would be
even better, so everytime I
thought about food, I would
drink a big glass of orange
or grapefruit juice.
It never dawned on me to
look up the calories in the
orange and grapefruit
juices. I’m afraid if I don’t
get this weight off now, I will
continue putting more and
more on, so I need your help.
DEAR READER—As you
already know, an eight
ounce glass of orange juice
or grapefruit juice is about
90 calories. Assuming you
drank six glasses a day, and
you may have drunk more,
that would be 540 calories a
day. In a month, that would
be about 16,200 calories—or,
the number of calories found
in four and-a-half pounds of
body fat. So, if you only
gained two pounds a month,
you may have been doing
well.
I am sending you The
Health Letter number 4-7,
Weight Losing Diet, that you
can use as a guide to your
weight control program.
Walk every day as that is a
big help, and the more you
can increase your walking,
the better you will do. Others

Corn starch gleans rug > ■

POLLY’S PROBLEM
DEAR POLLY -1 have a small off-white sheepskin
throw rug and wonder if anyone can tell me how to
clean it. I tried a dry shampoo but it did not seem to
help. - M.C.
DEAR M.C.-I am presuming your rug is unclipped
and has the fur on the skin. The best thing would be
to take it to a dry cleaner. If that is not possible
sprinkle corn-meal on it with a generous hand, leave
a while and then take out of doors and shake out as
much as possible and then brush out the remainder.
I have cleaned fur pieces this way. Some people use
dampened saw dust. I have heard, but never tried,
that whiteness can be restored to white fur rugs by
spraying with a solution of hydrogen peroxide and
even hanging out in the sun afterwards. Perhaps
some of the readers have more satisfactory ways
that they will tell us about.- POLLY.
DEAR POLLY - A rug sample will make an excellent
mat to use on a desk or work table as a protection from
scratches when a typewriter, portable sewing machine,
etc., is used. - BEVERLY.
DEAR POLLY-I use a good window cleaner to clean my
eye glasses and find they are much easier to see through
and really polish up better than anything else I have ever
tried.
My husband fixed an efficient way to keep clothespins.
He cut a slit through the handle on an empty plastic
distilled water jug so it could be slipped on to the
clothesline. He then made the opening large enough so I
could reach in to get clothespins out when needed. This not
only protects the clothespins from stormy weather but
makes it easier to hang and collect clothes as the container
slides along the line as one moves to hang or take down
clothes. No more excess clothespins hanging along the line.
- TERRI.
DEAR POLLY - I really get good use out of a pair of
panty hose. When they can no longer be worn as usual I cut
the tops off above the knees and use these panties under
shorts or slacks. I cut the feet off above the ankles and use
as footsies and the leg part between makes great ties for
laundry bag, garbage bags or tieing up tomato plants. -

Many people do have an
urge to eat more when they
stop smoking. My best tip is
to drink a glass of water
whenever you feel the urge,
or go for a walk. The biggest
reason why people gain
weight after stopping smok
ing is from substituting eat
ing for smoking. And then
the body thrives and uses
food better because it is
healthier after you quit poi
soning your cells with nico
tine.
DEAR DR. LAMB—I had
a liver biopsy, and the doc
tor said I have a fatty liver.
He didn’t give me any medi
cation or tell me what to do
to help the condition.
I have often read that a
fatty liver precedes cir
rhosis of the liver. Is there
anything I can do about it? I
am not a drinking woman.
I’m 72, and weigh 145.1 have
had my gall bladder re
moved 20 years ago, and had
jaundice 40 years ago.
DEAR READER—Your
doctor didn’t recommend
anything because he proba
bly thought you were doing
fine. Fatty deposits in the
liver may occur from previ
ous liver damage or from
excessive alcohol consump
tion, or even from eating too
much fat and no carbohy
drates, or in severe diabet
ics. There are many causes
for it.
Yes, it can precede cir
rhosis of the liver. But that is
not always the case, either.
You are wise not to use
alcohol. The only other rec
ommendation I would make
would be to be sure that you
get plenty of lean red meat
in your diet, and your daily
quota of B vitamins. Other
wise, I would not be overly
concerned about it.
