Manager No. 7 probably will be announced early next week, said Braves Director of Player Personnel Bill Lucas. New York Yankees coach Bobby Cox had been the apparent frontrunner, but former St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets star third baseman Ken Boyer came in for an interview last weekend and said later, “I got the im pression it is between Cox and me.” Bobby Bragan, the Braves’ first manager in Atlanta and now head of the National Association of Minor Leagues, said the new manager “has to be his own man...he has to do it his way.” Billy Hitchcock managed the Braves in 1966 and 1967 and now is president of the Southern League. He said he would tell the incoming Braves manager to improve the team’s defense. Since he can remember, he said, defense has been the Braves’ downfall. He is the only one of the six to say he wanted to go back to managing — and he even applied unsuccessfully to be rehired by the Braves after they fired him. He said the Braves should take a page from the Atlanta Falcons, a National Football League doormat until this season and now holders of a surprising 5-4 record. “The Braves should check up the hall and take note of what the Falcons did,” he said. “They hired a football man and got out of his way. Now, it looks as if they’re turning it around. The Braves should get a baseball man and let him do it.” Chris Hudgins bowls 223 Chris Hudgins bowled a 223 game and a 549 series Monday night in the Griffin Ladies League.
