Bj* No Mail north of Raloigh, w&a re- eeived last night. SIX are now due. A man calling himself James Washington Edwards, lately from North Carolina, but now of Union District, in South Carolia, was committed to Jail in Charleston, on Sa turday evening last, by John Michel, Esq- charged with having passed several coun terfeit Bank Bills of the Planters’ Bank of Georgia, dec. The Courier states that there were found upon him, when taken, about 220 dollars in $10 Notes of the Nash ville Bank, and two JlO Notes of the Plan ters’ Bank of Georgia—which are evidently counterfeits, and very coarsely executed.— He stated that he arrived in town the even ing preceding, in company with a man nam ed Geo. W. House. Search was made most of the day on Sunday, for House, but he Was not found. The former represents that he received in payment from House, the counterfeit money which he was detected in passing. The Book of Revelation unsealed,—'The Washington Journal states, that the great demand for this work having suggest ed the expediency oi'increasing the Edition, and of making arrangements to gratify cu riosity every where in the country at once, a delay of a few days will result to subscri* hers in receiving it. Superior Court, January Tkii.m, 1325.} Presentments of tile Grand duty. ' Wo, the Grand. Jury of Chatham Coun ty, beg leave to return our thanks to his honor Judge Wayne, lor his prompt, atten tion in the discharge of tfie arduous duties of his office during the present term. 1st. We present for the reprehension of our fello.w-citir.ens, and thereby for correc tion, the conduct of the managers of the lust election of county officers, for receiv ing the votes of soldiers of the U. States, stationed in this place. At this election those entitled to vote, even such as could vote for the members of the general As sembly, by the constitution, must be citi zens and inhabitants of the state ; mu6t have resided six months within the county, and must have paid all taxes required of them, or which they had an opportunity of paying for the year preceding the election. Upon this point we recommend the enact ment of such a law- as ignorunce cannot mistake, or corruption disregard* and for the prevention of sailors and other tran sient persons who are not properly entitled | to vote, from doing so. We also recom mend that in addition to the other qualifica tions, no person shall be permitted to vote in Towns situated in the lower counties, who has not been a freeholder therein at least thirty days previous to the election, or whose name has not been registered in a Book r to be kept for that purpose by the Clerk of the Inferior Court of such county, at least thirty days previous to the time at which his vote is offered. 2d. We present as a serious grievance the long and continued practice of Justices of the peace charging more than the fees specified by law, 3d. We present as a hardship the im prisonment of persons without other speci fication of crimes than vagrancy, and quote as a recent instance Samuel Elsworth, who was imprisoned from July last until Janu ary instant. 4th. We recommend the institution of a Court of Errors and Appeals, as a most de- Smyrna papers to Oct. 8th are received j sirable improvement to the Judiciary Sys- At Boston by the Daily Advertiser. Their, 1 tom of our State, and we flatter ourselves contents are not important, nor is the intel-i it requires no argument on our part to eon- ligence so late as has hitherto been re-' vice the citizens of Georgia of the import- ceived. But there are some few items ance of such a court. Worth transcribing. They contain accounts from the Morea in which it is stated, that Colocotroni was received into favor, and had been put in command of 10,000 men, for undertaking the siege of Patras. The Turks had re treated from Attica to Ncgropoint. Gourra Was waiting at Athens for a supply of money previous to entering on an expedition.— | 5th, We suggest the propriety of an act ^o prevent unrecorded mortgages from ta king precedents of Judgments. 6th. We present, as an evil requiring cor rection, the collection of negroes at milita ry parades, funerals, &c., and advise the adoption of some measures to prevent simi lar occurrences in future. 7th. We again present to the notice of the proper authorities, the laws of the State rc- Sabbath, lor. Die in tenor. They then rtoved to wards Limociro. Foreign.—The manner of administering justice under the present regime in Spain, may be gathered from the following fact, related in a foreign paper :—A young man was tried in Barcelona, for. having been found in a mob which was preventing a Monk from preaching the doctrines of re venge and murder. The court decided, that there were no proofs of his guilt, but sufficient of presumptive testimony to con demn him to the galleys fin* life. A further instance of the deplorable situ ation to which Spain is reduced, will be found in the following act:—During the existence of the constitution, the waste or barron lands, known by the name of Baldi-, os, had been distributed as military rewards, and some parts had been sold to enter- prizing settlers, and n great portion of that land was actually located and cultivated.— An order has been published by the Coun cil of Castile, forbidding, not only the fur ther improvement of those lands’but actu ally commanding that the improvements tie destroyed and the land restored to its for mer barren condition. Baron Fain, formerly private secretary to Napoleon, and also Count Segur, form erly chamberlain,, have published Histories of the Grand Army, and life of Napoleon, which excite considerable attention. f+ondon, D c. 2.—.Mrs. Fauntleroy.—ll was, we are assured from the best authori ty, intended to conceal the fact of the eje ction of the husband of this unfortunate Indy until to-duy, and ever since the final determination of his fate, she lias been led to lkdievo tliut this was the day appointed for his death. Yesterday morning, howev er, the fact was communicated to hr, in Hie way which her friends rrmsid re l would add the least to her already harrowed feel ings. We are given to understand that, the communication was made by letter, from n gentleman who has all along taken a deep interest in the fate of her unfortunate hus band, as well as in that of Mrs F. and her son. This was done about, ten o’clock yes terday morning. This letter was also ac companied by one from her son. Mrs. FV sufferings are the most poignant ; she h confined to her room, and sees none but hot nearest friends. As soon ns the fact was made known to her, the shutters of her a- ptmrnent.H were closed. Yesterday morning Mr. Baker went to Newgate, and huving obtained possession of t he ring which the unfortunate gentle man wore at his deat h, (to which we advert ed yesterday, in our report oftlie execution) lie delivered it to Mrs. IJartis, the wife of the principal turnkey, pursuant, t > the dy ing request of Mr. Fauntleroy, neenmpany- ingit with the acknowledgments lie felt due to that person for her unremil ing attention to his wants and comforts during the time he bad been under her care. Not a soul was Ba ved. The Greeks sent seven fire ships in succession towards Gibraltar’s vessel; the latter succeeded in avoiding them, and dis played thereby as much skill as bravery.— All i liese fire ships were destroyed, without having uny effect, but finally, one sent more Successfully, was attached to a Turkish cor vette. The commander of the latter, sprung like lightning into the fire ship, suc ceeded in detaching it, returned to his own corvette, and preserved it, by cutting away at the instant, a mast that had taken fire. The Captain Pacha has rewarded this no ble action by a Caftan. The combined Ottoman squadron succeeded, by pressing Beil, in reaching the Greeks, who lost many vessels, burnt and sunk; several others saved themselves, though much damaged, The Boston Centinel contains a list of the manufactories in the State of Massachu, setts, together with the amount of capital of each.
