There is little doubt of its passage in that body, along with the bill authorizing a subscription to the stock ofthe Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, which, like the other, is now depen ding nil its third reading. IDth ult. 27,715 A steam engine lias been constructed in by a Mr. Thomas Dotterer. which is described us so simple in its con struction, that any negro mechanic can su perintend its operation The Engine is of five horse power, and griitdB from eight to ten bushels per hour with ease, and con sumes not more than one third of a cord of common pine wood. The whole expense of Engine and Mill, it is said, would not ex ceed 2000 dollars. By its cheapness it will be an acquisition on plantations that are de ficient of water for impelling machinery it can be applied to any purpose, especially to ginning, grinding, pounding, &c, A fire broke out at 2 o’clock of tho morn ing of the 23d ult. at St. Augustine, in the house occupied by Mrs. Campbell as a boar ding house, whish destroyed the Custom- House, and two others before it was oxtin guished. The loss is estimated a - . $20,000. A Mr. Warburg was much injured by being compelled to precipitate himself a distance of 40 or 50 feet from the roof of the house in which the fire originated. The sales of this article have been pretty extcnsiv|, and as the demand has been chiefly for the best qualities, the mar ket has become bare of every kind that can be called prime. The sales have been up wards of 1000 tierces from $2 46 a 3 34 per 100 lbs- on the usual credit. His inventive genius rendered him one of the greatest benefactors uf the age, and was the means of chnnging the ! whole course of induslry in the southern section of the Union. Previous to tlio in vention of his Cotton-Gin, in 1793 or 4, scarcely a pound of upland cotton was rais ed for exportation.
