From Washington.—We have received a letter from a correspondent at Washington, dated on the 7th inst. He states that General Jackson stands at present with the force of eight states, via. New-Jersey. Pennsylvania Maryland, South Carolina, Alabama, i on- nessee, Mississippi, and Indiana. These are the only states that are counted upon at this moment. Mr. Adams stands, with the accession of Mr. Clav’s interest, as follows Maine, Rhode Island, New-IIampehire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, N. York, Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois, and Louis iana. Missouri remains doubtful, but it is thought will go for Adams, if Jackson does not get more votes than eight on the first ballot. Mr. CRAwroRn stands with the states of Delaware, Virginia, North Caro lina, and Georgia, The most general im pression appears to be, that Mr. Adams will be the successful candidate. We omit the calculations and opinions which arc added, believing them unneces sary, when perhaps in the course of one day, or two at furthest, we shall have the actual vote of the house ; only adding the following short extract from the Richmond Enquirer :— Mr. Cruwford's friends, wc learn from all quarters, are cool, firm and united. They will not listen to the idea of their having a second choice. Such is tho uniform sub stance of all the letters, and all the accounts we obtain from Washington. Should the preliminaries to voting in the House of Representatives, have been com pleted in time on Wednesday last, we may possibly receive the result of the first vote »*>!« evening—to-morrou we shall receive the proceedings of the first day in full, and any that may nave ta»... place previous to the departure of the mail on the second day Georgia.—It affords us pleasure to dwell open the prosperity of any portion of tho State of Georgia •, but we are particularly gratified at the increase of that portion of it, with which the city of Savannah must be closely connected. We alludo to the western part of the state which is advancing by rapid strides to wealth and consequence. Letters which we have seen speak in the most en couraging manner of the prospects of that portion of the state. The new counties are settling with astonishing rapidity, and the emigrants are of the most respectable kind. This is pcrticnlarly applicable to the counties of Bibb, and Monroe. The latter in two years time will be the most populous county in the Btate, and but little behiud any in wealth and intelligence. Do order of the Fruitful, ALEXANDER HUNTER %, Feb ia£» , years, Anecdote of Oglethorpe.—Old General O Callao, two Spanish frigates—which it is said is well authenticated. A small sloop was brought into Havana, on the 20tli ult. from ail out port called Jaruco, by nine armed boats, under the or ders of an officer of the Spanish Navy, which had been despatched in pursuit of her. It appeared that she had been fitted out by the permission of the commandant at St. Jago, to go in pursuit of pirates—was afterwards fallen in with by a British ves sel of war, who suspecting the genuineness of the commission, took it from him, and di rected the sloop to follow her into Havana, where its correctness could be tested. This her captain did not think proper to do, but put put into Jaruco, and came over land to Havana, to recover his commission, when the boats wore despatched to bring the sloop round to that place. She was armed and had on board sixteen men. A Mew Invention.—A Paris paper men tions an invention which must add all the beauty of statuary to the lightness and fa cility of workmanship in wood. It is a pre paration of wood, by means of which, they are enabled to imitate the most preci ous species of wood and the rarest marbles. All the infinite blendings of veins and shades, the transparent clouds of marble, which the pencil of the painter can imitate only on the surface, are obtained by the inventors to whatever thickness they desire. The wood of their composition, whatever object of im itation or fancy it represents, may be plann- , uii, >»iunnii any alter ation. This valuable invention opens a new and vaBt Sold to all the arts connected with cabinet-making and ornamental archi tecture. In speaking of the paragraph recently circulated in the newspapers, relative to the manner in which General Laeavette had invested the sunt voted to him by Congress, the National Gazette remarks—that the beloved guest wished tho national gift to be inveated in the national funds, so as to con nect his fortunes, as they have been here tofore connected, with the whole Union, and therefore asked the opinion of the Presi dent of the U nit eff StatcB as to the best mode of accomplishing that object. The latter gentleman, aware of the loss which would attend the purchase of stock at its advanced price, consulted the Board of Di rectors, who, immediately and unanimous ly, agreed to offer the General, at par, the amount which lie should desire of tile re cent four and a half per cent, loan, and also to remit his dividends to France, every Como the rival of Augusta There is no quarter, without any chnrge for agency.— doubt that IS or 20,000 bales of Cotton will be shipped there next season, Ac. They afford a cheering prospect to the state in general, as well as the city of Savannah— With a sound currency, an entorprising po pulation, and great natural advantages, the day is ftSt approaching when this state may look with contempt at the puny attempts to deprive her of her trade and resources. The deaths by Consumption, were sev en hundred and thirly-six. The males ex ceeded the females sixty-six in number. The number of colored persons that died of this fatal disease, amounted to one hun dred and seven. The entire deaths of this class of every complaint, were be van hun dred and eighteen, The small-pox, says tho eity Inspector, which commenced its frightful ravages in November, one thousand eight hundred and twenty-three, has not yet been nrrosted in its course. During the last year, three hundred and ninety-four died of thin com plaint, of which one hundred were colored persons. This National Legislature.—On Monday, 7th instant, the Senate resumed tho considera tion of the report of the Committee on the Judiciary, unfavorable to the petition of Elienozer Oliver and othere, together with the motion to strike out of the resolution accompanying, the word “not,” so as to re verse the report. The debate on this sub ject was resumed, and continued during the whole of this day’s sitting Mr. Van Burcn spoke at great length, a- gainst the {claim of the petitioners, ground ing his objections on these points: That this question had been once decided by a competent tribunal, established at the in stance of tho parties seeking relief i that it was against the policy of ti>« govemmem, and aeaiost ihc public interest, to open uiese proceedings, and, if they were open ed, there was nothing in these claims foun ded either injustice or equity. Mr. Kelly, Mr. Seymour, ami Mr. Mills, each spoke at considerable length in reply to Mr. Van Burcn, aud in favor of the claim of the petitioners ; after which, the Senate adjourned. In the House of Representatives, Mr. Cocke from the Committee on Indian Af fairs, reported a hill tor the preservation and civilization of the Indian tribes within the U. Mr. Poinsett, of S, C. offered the follow ing resolutions: “ Resolved, Than an immediate represen tation ought to be made to the Captain- General of Cuba, sotting forth the losses and injuries inflicted upon the property and persons of the citizens of the U. Ireland.—The arrest of Mr. O’Connell, the celebrated Irish Catholic barrister, for seditious words ulledged to have been Bjio ken at a meeting of tne Catholic Associa tion, threw Dublin into great agitation, and no doubt must have produced the liveliest sensation throughout Ireland. He is ex ceedingly popular with the whole body of the Irish Catholics, and if the government should proceed against him with much ri gor, a terrible, consuming flume may be kindled, lie remarked to tho officer who arrested him—“ There is one thing you’ll admit, Mr. Alderman, that the Attorney General will have no difficulty in getting a grand jury to find any bills ho pleases against me.” Jeremy Bcnthum has written to the Catholic Association enclosing them his subscription offive pounds towards the Catholic rent, which is a fund raised by general contribution, for the purpose of aid ing the cause of Catholic emancipation, and is likely to amount in the end to a very con siderable sum : the Cork Reporter says 150,000 pounds ayear!
