Bordenux, during ihe month of January, from imprudent exposure on deck, 1 was seized with a violent fever. Having no medical at tendants on board, I was compelled to bear it, as l ought for two weeks, when on my ar- ival at Charleston, S. C. it was treated as fvphus. The skill of mv Physician subdued the fever, but Pltm'ix-1 ike, the termination of this gave ris* to a disease equally distress ing, and which, till now. I had thought incur* ♦ble. Various abscesses made their unwel come appearance, particularly on the j >ints, which were swedc.cl to an enormous size.— These g*aduH)iy subsided into hard tumors, one of which on my left knee affected ti e bone—an incision was now made and a isirpe evneuation of mis, mixed with pieces of bu e took place. In addition to this, l suffered ihe mogt excruciating pains in my joints that mar. ever experienced. Every thing that was administered either gave me no relief < r ser ved lo aggravate the disease, the severity of which increased wiih every succeeding year.
