About live years age, on my pa^SAge fi on-
Bordeaux, during the month of January, from
mprudent exposure oil deck, l was seized
with a violent fever. Having no medical at
(endantson board, I was compelled to bear
it, as I might for two weeks, when on my ar-
ival at Charleston, S. C* it was treated as
Typhus. The skill of my Physician subdue d
the fever, but P' miix-like, the termination
if this gave ris'* to a disease equaHy distres
og, and which, till now. 1 had ih oght incut~
ble. Various ahscesaes made thei newel-
rome appearance, particularly on the j unta,
which were swe led to an enormous aiz«.—
These gradually subsided into hard tumors t
ne of which on my left knee affected tne
hone—an incision was now made and a large
evacuation of nus, mixed with pieces of bone
look place. 11 addition to this, 1 suffer^ec the
most excruciating pains in my joints Dial ma,
ever experienced- Every thing that was
administered either gave me no relief « r ser
ved to aggravate the disease, the severity nf
whi'-h increased with every succeeding year.
