Porhaps this literary orgasm may arise from two causeB. Philologists are apt. to form too exalted an opinion of the nature of their studies, while they often make their peculiar taste a standard by which they judge of the sentiments of others. It is not thus with the scientific and the moral wri ter ; Science is modest and cautious, Mo rality is humble and resigned, white Philo logy alone is arrogant nnd positive. A fact in science is found with infinite labour, iiui may be overturned by a new discovoiy ; and an action in morality may be so mingled with human passions, that we hesitate to pronounce it perfect, and analyze it with tranquility. The Pedants of the last ago. exercised a vanity and ferocity, and by oho of them was the celebrated Montaigne, the venerable father of miscellanies, called “bold and ignorant fellow." To thinking readers, this critical summary may appear mysterious; for Montaigne had imbibed the spirit of all the moral writers of antiquity ; and although he has made a capricious com plaint of “ defective memory," wo cannot but wish the complaint had been more real; for in his works may bo discovered, as much compilement, as reflection, and he is for their amusement.-, and they .like are W^hui V i,y the ' sensible, that few things are written and heavy rains, which presented the sugar al- reports a parrel of 550 bales prime 0 \dt read with greater pleasure, than one, though ready made from, being brought to market*- Georgia Uplands was torn at sci. pn njp jjj ~ - —r- -- ss s sr ewia « If Literature is only with some mere a- r j a e._Jf.
