That in our possession, was obtained near Bogo ta, the capital. It is of an extremely soft and'perfectly silky texture end glossy ap pearance, of a short staple and dark or din gy color. We ere informed that it grows on a tree of considerable height, different from our plant. The cotton grows round the seed, in something. like the shape of a pine-apple, so that when picked it requires no ginning. The Indians work.it into shawls, die, and a quantity has been sent to France, Ibr the purpose of ascertaining whether at .cannot be incorporated iu the .manufacture of silk goods. We understand that a gentleman of Scriven County, has planted a small quantity of the seed, by way uf experiment. The loss by the, late fire et Boston, is. va riously estimated, from 500,000, to 1,000,000 of dollars. The fire is said to be the most destructive that ever occurred in that city, and by far the most extensive of auy since the great fire of 1787. Many of the largest dry goods importers end'dealers, were among the sufferers. They had, most of them, just received their spring importa tions from Europe, and though considerable of their property was saved from tho fire, it wai not without dsmage. It appears that the first express received hi Augusta, with the accounts by the Cri sis, by a few hours, was one during the night, over-land fYom New-York. There was a sale of foreign coffee, the result of which was a decline in the price of from 2s to 3s per cwt. There was nothing doing ip sugars or spices. Our accounts from Batavia are to the 8th of November. The spirit of English spec ulation would soon be felt in that colony, two fast sailing vessels having been des patched some time ago with orders to pur chase up coflee, and all the other produc tions of Batavia. But the working people are not merely ac quiring knowledge—they ale communica ting it, und to tlioee in a condition above them. Look at the cheap publications, con veying knowledge nf science ami tiie useful arts, published in Loudon ; and look at the merit and character of their contents.— They not only linve the merit of ingenuity, and of useful and curious information, but are distinguished by agrucoof style and a propriety of tone which shames and rebukes works & authors of much higher pretension. In fact, the common people are rapidly usur ping that knowledge which used to be tiie prerogative ofthose who are regordod as not of tlio common people. We liud the working artisan appropriating the theory and practice of arithmetic, geometry me. chanlcs, physics, and chemistry—and what remains after this but poetry, speculation, and the mere luxuries of literature ■ Upon this aspect of society we shall offer but one remark. Social superiority is not main tainable without a certain superiority of knowledge and intellect. It is therefore clearly incumbent upon the uppor classes, those who are above manual labour, to look about them, or they will be pushed from •heir pre-eminence. Tiie alarm has alrea dy boon taken ill France. A committee ofthe Deputies, in the last summer, advised the suppression nf schools of arts supported by the Government, from an avowed appre hension ofthe mischiefs ofeducation among the working people.—Lon, Paper. twenty one.
