MAY 10, )««■ The citiscna of Chatham County, are re- sped folly requested to attend at the Coun cil Chamber in the Exchange, bn FRIDAY NEXT, at twelve o’clock, to express their views in relation to a proper disposition of the late acquired territory firom the Creek Indians, and to adopt such measures in re lation thereto as may to them appear prop er. JOHN STEVENS, TIM. J. BARNARD, E. JACKSON, PAT. HOUSTOUN, W. C. DANIELL, R. F. WILLIAMS, A. PORTER, JOS. GUMMING, JOHN P. WILLIAMSON. ROB. HABERSHAM, ED. HARDEN, P. 8.—The Exchange bell will be rung gt the hour of meeting.. It will be perceived by the above, that the important subject of the expected Lot tery for the disposal of tlm recent Creek Cession, will be taken up by the citizens of Savannah. We believe that little diversity of opinion exists as to the impolicy of the Lottery mode of disposing of Lands, among this community—hut the objections to it require to be embodied to demand that attention they deserve, nnd to give weight and influence to the public opinion. We regret to learn that the ship Ogle thorpe, for Liverpool, which was towed down the river on Sunday, dragged her an chors on Sunday night during a gale from the north east, and went ashore on Tybee Island. We are indebted to gentlemen, who left her last evening at 5 o’clock, for the following correct statement of tier sit uation at that time: The ship lies inside the Light—the Light bearing from her S. S. E. —-she heals in a small degree to leeward to wards the land, and has round her at low water, from three to four feet water. She lay at the above hour, with two shots of hawser out {180 feet each) in a N. N. W. direction, with a kedge attached—and had received no injury whatever. Ttie pilot- boat Eclipse was despatched during the day to her naaiatanctT, with from 10 to SO liamlt, —the schooner Emcline was also sent down, and preparations were making to unlade the deck load. It was intended to endeav or to get her off next high water (three o’ clock this morning); but it is very doubt ful whether she can he got off until a change of wind tn the southward. The Small Pox.—The existence of this Ilia hesome disease has been officially an nounced in Monticello, in this state— Whence the disease has been received, is an important enquiry, for we may be expos ed to the same calamity by intercourse with the infected part. Is it true that it has been derived from the city of Charleston ? We have been informed that it is. Is it true that the varioloid has existed ill that city for several months past? We put these ^bestinns for no other purpose but for information on an interesting subject. If they are satisfactorily answered in the ne gative, we shall be gratified—if in the af firmative, we must take leave to express the reprehension which every man should feel at the concealment of a fact, so highly important to every one of those among whom this Inatliesome and dangerous dis ease may bo propognted. ., . , „ . cr has paid, fur the support of the po[ du- may consider himself interested. The pla cid editor of the New-York Evening Post, adds this pithy comment to this asser tion—“ He muil be stupidly blind indeed, who can be gulled by the above paragraph.” Aa we have never, in our course thus far, attempted to gull those who have thought proper to place confidence in our remarks upon any subject, wr beg leave to assure Mr. Coleman, that the assertion is suscep tible of proof. It is a fact, that a merchant of this city, purchased the present spring, British Cot ton Goods in New-York for this market; and on his return was offered the same pat tern, of the same article, at 20 per cent re duction (at which it ia yet held) on what he had actually paid in the city of New York- Other articles are offered at pro portionality^ low rates—«nd we know of instances in which those who had visited' advance. It will be perceived by our Price Current, that British Dry Goods arc quot ed at from 30 to 60 per cent advance—62J is the utmost limit which lias been asked for any description of these goods—hut they may- be obtained at 00—here is a difference of37{ percent in the maximum price in stead of25. But if other facts are wanting in support of our assertion—we will state that British Goods within a short time pnsl, have been bought in ' this city for the Charleston market, where they have been sold at 2fi per cent advance on the Savan nah price. Nay, it is a fact, of which we are assured, that the demand for British Goods in this city: is greater for the Charles ton market and other places north of us, than for the up-country, and the latter is at this moment, more active than usual. Thus much is duo to ourselves and to the editor of the Post. We will not believe him so “ stupidly blind” as not to perceive that we were correct in our original assertion —nor so deficient in candor aa not to ac knowledge it, even at the expense of his gullibility. Many valuable cargoes of Cotton, have beep shipped at this port and Charleston, during the present season a but the follow ing shipped in the Oglethorpe, exceeds in amount any yet mentioned It consists of 124,092 lbs of Sea Islands, and 220,4110 lbs. of Uplands, the aggregate value of which is $129,116 24. Mr. Stuart Wohtlev, and Mr. Deni son, Members of the British Parliament, have arrived in New-York, and are about to embark for England. Mr. Stanley, M. P. lias preceded them a few weeks, in their return to Europe. These gentlemen have performed a tour through the United States, in pursuit of information, They have been received and entertained hospitably, and from ev ery acco int, have been gratified by the re sult of their observations. Whatever may be their impressions of our country, wc feel perfectly satisfied with the opinion they may have formed. We have nothing to fear from the enquiries of men of education and intelligence, who will judge dispassionately and with discrimination, and, of course, correctly. The libels upon our country, which have afforded food lur the Quarterly and other Reviews, have proceeded from those of an entirely different character. Surplus Capitai—The rage for the in vestment of capital, in incorporated joint stock companies, appears to be quite as ex cessive in our American Commercial Em porium, as it is at the present moment in London. We mentioned the case of the Water Company, a day or two since—a parallel to it is now offorded in the Morris Canal Company, established by the Legis lature of New-JerHey. at its last session, iu the City of Jersey, apposite New-York.— The Commercial Advertiser ofthe 27th ult. says—“ The books for the Morris Canul, were opened yesterday at Jersey, and the crowd was such that it seemed as though the city of New-Yurk had moved over the river. More than $10,000,000 were sub scribed.” The Gazette increases the amount to twenty millions. The task of dividing the stock among the numerous applicants, must be both delicate and difficult. In Providence eleven hundred thousand dollars were subscribed between ten and one o’clock, for the stock of the Blackstonc Canal—capital $300,000. & freight or pi For New*¥ork, on Saturday, nt from 22J to 36}'. cents for Uplands—sitiec which no transactions bine taken place by which we might be enabled to fix a price—our quotations may, thure- And ifMr. Curwen and other agriculturist. fore, bo cupsiderud nominal. That, in the opinion of tha meeting, the bills of the Bank of Darieft rest on a solid foundation for their redempi tion, without taking into consideration tha deep interest which the state of Georgia has in that institution, both as a large stockholder and holder of its bills, and that the indulgence required by those of its deb, tors who suffered by the memurable calam ity of last September, constitutes the best excuse which can ever be given, for not be: ing in a situation to redeem them with spe cie as soon as presented. Resolved. That this meeting have full confidence in the disposition which the Pre sident and directors ofthe Bank of Darien, have now evincod, and in the means which that institution, it is believed, will soon pos sess, to place its credit on the same footing as tint of the other chartered banks of the state of Georgia. Resolved, That the thanks of this meet ing be tendered to the President and Direc tors of the bank of Darien, for the prompt, frank, and lucid replies which they have given to the inquiries of a committee ap pointed at a former meeting. Lima, January 4.—That the capitula tion ofthe Spanish Army of the interior, and occupation of this city by the Patriots, have not-produced the improvement in the price of Dry Goods that was anticipated, is owing in a great measure, to the swollen state of the rivers, which precludes an active inter course with the interior, and prevents the population from descending for their regu lar supplies, nor will this obstacle bn remo ved until May, when trade will resume its Accustomed course. The demand may be said to be limited at present in the immedi ate consumption of the place. Platillas of fair qualities are retailing in the shops at §16 ; Bretagnes 4 a 4J to b; duties 30 pr.ct. Sugars and Rum arc without demand. Intel ligence has been received from Quilca that the Spanish squadron was to sail for Ma nilla.
