Scion's Report for the week ending 1th inet. No Deaths. By order of the Chairman, I. K. TF.FFT, Secretary. * IT No mail tvas received yesterday north of Charleston. Our city at the present time, is blessed with an extraordinary degree of health. It will be perceived that no death is reported fur the past week, and notwithstanding the great heat of the weather for a time past, we understand not a single cuse of lever was reportc I by either of the Ward Com mittees of the Board of Health yesterday. Superior Court.—-Thomas Franklin Hall, whs yesterday found guilty on the first indictment pre ented agninst him, for robbing Williams’s Store, which we dot il- ed at the time it was committed, last win ter. Three other indictments remain to be tried against him. His colleague, Ells worth, we understand will be arraigned this day. The Creeks.—Major Andrews, who has arrived at Milledgcvillc, from Washington, charged by the President, with investiga ting the late affairs in the Creek Nation, and the Agency of Crowell in them, we understand has called a meeting of the Creek Indians, to be held on the 14th inst. The Philadelphia papers have made them selves exceeding merry with the exaltation of a person named Pluck, a hostler in an inn, to the command of a regiment of mili tia, and their jests and jibes have tilled ma ny columns. Thi« lias been carried, in our opinion, too far—if the Colonel is the char acter they represent him, ribaldry is not likely to drive him from the office, or to benefit the public—if lie is capable of sus taining it, thpy should recollect that espe cially in our country “ Honor and shame from no condition rise and they should recollect, too, that in thus holding up the militia of the country to scorn, they are weakening an arm of the nation which must, after all, be a principal dependence in the hour of danger. Let them rather try to give it character, and emulation. The New-York Albion in noticing the wreck of the Spring Grove, on the Coast of Africa, refers to Padduck’s Narratft which we quoted a few days since for #ie same purpose, to refute the supposition that the United States sloop of war W asp. muy have been the vessel spoken of by the Arabs, us wrecked on the coast of Africa. Letters from Havana, mention an on- gagement between the Spanish brig of war Hercules, and tho Colombian brig General Soubletto, off Point Jucos—after a few broadsides both sheared off. The Edenton, N. C. Gazette, of tho 27th ult. says that the bodies of four Men wore picked up on the north and south side of Currituck Inlet, all of them with their heads and hands cut off. They are supposed to have been part of the crew of a vessel in a state of mutiny. Carolina, has undertaken to rescue from oblivion those songs which may yet remain of the many which were composed and sung by the American Yeomanry during the Revolutionary war. The original songs and ballads of a people, afford a sure index to judge of the feelings of the moss, at the time they were written—and are frequent ly a record of passing events which may be valuable to the historian. Among these a part of which are recollected, and which the compiler is desirous to obtain, is one ill the form ofp Dialogue between an officer and a soldier, to the tune of the “ Banks of the Dee.” The following is given as a spe citneu of it. It was in the summer, no breezes were blowing When we were encamp’d near the Swamps of Santee; The gnais and mosquitoes around us did hover, The frogs in each pond they sang merrily, The toriea they in the swamps were a lying. Beef and rice in the kettles on the tires ontly largo was made, and Mr*. Bbormun was once ugu'm folded in the arms ot her husband and restored to the world. 1 * Caution.—An ingenious mode of swind ling has lately bf*dn discovered, in making seven bank bills out of six. The authors of tho invention nut the notes in two, in differ ent places, and unite each bill again by pas* ting it on a part of a leaf taken from the Bi ble. At least all that have yet been seen are done in this way. By this process it will be perceived that the bills so cut will be shorter than the bills not defaced. Five of tho notes will be deficient in different parts ofthe body, and two will have a piucc cut off from the ends of e*ch, which go to make up the othor five notes. A j^IO note of this description was offered to one of tho Banks this morning, and they refused to receive it; and such, we understand, has been the de termination of all the Batiks in this city, where their notes have been thus dealt with.— 2?t% Post. Circuit Court of the U S.—Samuel A. Wells vs. B irtlctt Holmes.—This was an ac tion for the invasion of the Plaintiff’s right to a patented machine culled a Lever Truss and Sling, being an improvement in the mode of suspending, topping, and bracing the lower yards ot ships or vessels. The plaintiffproduced his patent and model, and a model exhibiting the mode in use before his improvement, and u model also of tin* machine used by the defendant on the brig Massasoit. There was some difference in form, bu the question was whether, there was any difference of principle between the two machines. Witnesses were examined who testified that the two machines were upon the same principle, that the different modes of suspending the yard, the one be ing by a chain from the vessel’s top, the oih r upon a crane to the mast, did not change the principle or character of the in iciiinc. That the movement and effect*' wore the same in both modes. Thewitnes ses further testified to the utility ofthe ma chines, and to their getting into general UFO. The Jury, under the direction of the Court, being of opinion that the machines were subs!antially the Fame, and therefore that the plaintiff’s patent right had been in vaded, gave him a verdict of $175. Note—The Potent Law:: provide that the penaltiies shall be treble t'je amount of damages given by the Jury ; the above ver dict is ih rerbre equivalent to $525.—Bos ton Patriot. TO THE EDITORS OF THE GEORGIAN. A disease of an epidemic character, has prevailed with considerable violence among the negroes upon the rice plantations of Mr. John Potter and John P. It is said there has been on the plantation of Mr. Potter, from one hundred and fifty to two hundred blacks down at one time with this disease. Mr.* Potter’s loss has not exceeded twenty-five negroes, and the most of them were between the ages of forty and seventy-five years; Mr. Williamson’s loss we are informed, is not beyond fifteen—the «ges we have not been able to ascertain.— \Vo are credibly informed, that the disease is of local origin, as the negroes living on tho adjoining plantations have not in the slightest degree been affected with it.— Much credit is due to the medical gentle man, for their indefatigable exertion and skill in the management nnd care of those cases that have been confided to them. 128 liluls. The unprecedented spec ulation iu the English market has been productive ol an advance so sudden and un expected, that but lew had the good tur- tune to be prepared with a stock beyond their ordinary supply and must consequent ly, ere long, be compelled to purchase at the present high rntes, or suspend -r curtail their operations—many causes have been sought for to justify the extravagance of speculation ;but the diminution of supply, aided by the uncommon abundance of mo ney, are chiefly relied upon—we think these causes will not sustaiu the article at what appears ’o us more than double its natural price : our last crop was abundant and will probably exceed tiiat of any former season, and with regard to sudden acquisition of capital, it is probably nothing more than the fictions wealth which is produced by mercantile credit, and may be dissipated more easily titan acquired.
