Commodnre Porter has done what he believed to be hia duty; the Executive Officers have done what they believo to be theirs. It is not to be supposed that any personal feeling has mingled in a transaction of so serious import and great consequence. It will be time enough to make the merits of tho conduct of the accused and the accu sers the subject of comment when the re sult of tho pending trial shall be made known. That result will not depend upon our wishes, nor even public opinion, but upon tho ovidonce which shall bo presented to the Court, and their decision thereupon. In compliance with a requisition of Gen. E P. Gaines, Gov. Troup, has ordered two regiments to be raised by draft. -The vol unteer companies in the western section of the state will, however, form a respectable portion of those regiments. Tho draft will take place in this county to-morrow, for twenty-two inen, and wo ’suppose in the n- ther counties in the western part of the stale in a very few days. Tho counties composing Brig. Gen M’Donald’s Brigade, will furnish one company, besides Capt. Wright’s “ Macon Volunteers," and the fortunate drawers will be ordered to rendez vous at Perry, in Houston County, on Wed nesday the sixth July, to elect company officers. Whether those regiments will actually be called into service is a question of great doubt at present; but will in all probability, be determined in s fetv dnys. T/iey will however, be ordered to ho'd themselves in ruudiuess to march at a moment’s warning. Macon Jhessengir. The Consul General of Colombia, Colo nel L Palac 10, cautions the public against a person of the name of Rkartlo Bermudez, who styles himself a “ Colonel in the Co lombian sorvice, Into aid-de-cninp to the Li berator nnd brother of tho distinguished General nfthnt name," the enid Bermudez being an impostor nnd swindler. lie lus practised his arts in New York nn.l here, as appears by the Norfolk Beacon, lias ar rived in that city, with a view, no doubt, of continuing his plans of fraud and imposition. Tlie sexton informs us that this is double the usual average during the winter and early part of the spring. TO TIllTFuBLIC. The subjoined letter from Maj. Andrews, (United States’special agent,) is presented to the public, to prevent exaggeration, and misrepresentation. It speaks for itself. The reasons assign ed for my temporary suspension from the office of Agent, I trust will be duly under- stoimd and appeciated. Indeed the untiring leal manifested by Gov. Troup in the ac- oomplishnientofhis purpose, has rarely been equalled and never surpassed ;—it stunds without a parallel in the annals of persecu tion. I ask the public nnd my friends, to fuspend any opinion in relation to the sub ject connected with this suspension, until i can have an opportunity of submitting my defence- Far from seeking nny ndvunlngo from the locality of my witnesses in he Na tion, and from any situntio ns Agent—un willing.to be suspected, even by the most prejudiced, of being capable of using any influence which my official station mny be supposed to give me—and anxious to disarm my uccuser ofrhe slightest pretext fur any insinuation of that churracler i—If I had not received Mnj. Andrews letter suspending me during the time of taking the testimony, I should have asked it. I assure my friends and the public, that tho investigation will resnlt in the establishment of my innocence of tilt- charges prefornd against me by Gov. Troup; for, having every confidence in tho justice of the Government of niv country, and its officers appointed to conduct this in vestigation, and being conscious of the cor rect intentions by which my official conduct lms been inltueriecd—although I may for a season lie subject to the inquisitorial pro eeodings of the Governor and Legislature of Georgia, and may be compelled in conse quence thereof, to bear the populr odium, yet 1 feel persuaded that in the enlightened judgment of my countrymen I may safely i dv. and from its award I can have nothing to apprehend. 1 am respectfully. JOHN CROWELL. Creek Agency, June Check Agency. Flint-mver. 1 June‘II. mr,. \ Butt—You have been advisedofthomea sures heretofore pursued by the Presi dent of the United States and of the Secre tary of War, in relation to the charges, spe cific and implied, made against you as Intli- dinn Agent. I have now to inform you that a suspension from the exercise of your func tions as Indian Agent, (until all the testi mony tn be collected in the Indian nation has been obtained nnd examined,) bus been decided on. I herewith send you a copy of the evidence collected by a committee of the Georgia legislature, and their report as adopted by tire legislature. Copies of other documents promised me by the Governor of Georgia shall be furnished you as soon as those documents are received. You will accordingly turn over the Agency to tho Sub-Agent, Captain Triplett. , In resorting to the discretionary power invested in me by the President, I feel it auc to you to state frankly, that this deter mination docs not recced from ony present impression unfavorable to your innocence. I am nut at liberty, in my present peculiar situation, to form a Bettlod opinion on the charges made against you, until all the evi dence to be collected from every quarter has enn received and carefully examied. But I .lit 10 J' uuto eay, that so far as I am a liberty to take up a present impression it win favor of your integrity and honor. I »vj it due to ynu to make this statement, in consequence of the course (which must be considered an unjust one, if not oppressive,) pursued towards you by the authorities of wenrgia ; my impressions too being chiefly grounded on the expartc testimony taken Your suspension is made from courtesy to the authorities of Georgia, who have re peatedly and urgently demnndod it—on the greu id that it would be impossible to elicit unbiassed testimony in the Indian nation whilst you are in the exorcise of your func tions, It is done too from a desire to do a- way all pretexts which might otherwise hereafter be soized on to destroy conAdence in tho results of the examinations. The suspension will be withdrawn so soon as those examinations r*s concluded, should 'they result in establishing your innocence. Aa the object oftho general gnvernmen: jin this examination is the establishment of .truth, it could not but give me pain as its Agent to flud, that in taking testimony a- ' gumat you, ail tho usual prerogatives wero 1 lost sight of by Guorgia. You were neither “ informed oftho nature or cause ofthe ac cusation," or “confronted with witnesses" against yon, nor had you “ compulsory pro cess for obtaining wii ileuses" in your favor I Tlie evidence on which the harshest opin ions have been formed and expressed was not only expartc, but it lias been spread be fore the public in the Newspapers before you had been informed of its character, or had an opportunity of making your defence; end public opinion thereby forestalled before the general government, under which you hold your appointment, has had an opportu nity of examining tho testimony of either party. The course which you have deter mined tn pursue, as made known to me in the copy of your letter, of the "20th. to the Commissioners appointed by the Governor of Georgia to take further evidence against you,—in inviting them to lie present at the examination nfyour voluntary witnesses— ia of an opposite' chnrneter : and cannot fail to strengthen the belief of your conscious innocence. It is scarcely necessary to odd. that in the exalted character of tlie President of the United Stntes. nnd ofthe Secretary of War yftu have thesurest guarantee of a fair tri a), nnd n just decision on it. Very respectfully, sir. your most obedient servant. T. P. ANDREWS. Col. John Cro.voil, Special Agent. BOARD OF HEALTH. Savannah, Julv 8, 1825.
