There has, however, been one course left to the government of this no improvement of the market; Slate alter it became acquainted with the; contents of tho very extraordinary letter uf! Augusta, July 9.—Cotton.—'The market the Special Agent to the Agent tor Indian continues very dull and prices altogether Affairs, which we insert in another column, nominal—sales ofi or 3 lots of mixt quality Tlwt course has been pursued. Tho Btock being catod throughout the letter of Major An- unusually large, is estimated at 12,000 drews and that of Col. Crowell, which pieces. claims a moment’s notice. Those gentle-1 Com.—Plenty i sales at 75tto 874 conls. men appear to wish it to bo undorstood.thut I Exchange on New-York—00 days bills the whole proceeding before tho Committee • par to 1 1-2 per cent,di8Count i at sight, 1 to on tho Stote of the Republic, wss a sort of ij per cent, prem Star Chamber business. They complain, that Col. Crowell could not confront the witnesses, and had not compulsory process in his favor to obtain witnesses. Now whose fault was this ? The proceedings be fore that committee were public—Col. Crowell wus iu town nearly tho whole time occupied in tho investigation. If he wished to confront the witnesses and ernss-iuterro- gate them, why did he not apply to the com mittee for permission to do so ? We never heard of his making any such application. If he had applied we cannot believe that his application would have been rejected.— Now that tho investigation before the com mittee is over, ho appears to think the pri vilege of confronting the witnesses was a very important one. 11*it was thus impor tant. it was certainly worth osking for.— Seeing that he did not then think it so im portant, and therefore did not not ask for it, if he suffers wrong, it will be from his own neglect. It is certuinly too late now to Bet up a complaint of this sort. Hud the de mand oflhe privilege been duly made by him and refused by the committco there would have been just and serious ground of complaint. The sume remarks are applicable, we conceive, to that part of these letters which refers to the procurement of witnesses by compulsory process. We will n«k Cul. (.'. and Maj. A. whether they have in a solita ry instance, rnnde application to the au thorities of Georgia for such process ? If they have rnnde application, we would again ask whether they have been refused. Uut.il both these interrogatories are answer ed affirmatively, we must contend tlmt all complaints derived from this source are ut terly groundless. officiaTpapers. Executive Def.irtme.nt, Geo. ) Miltcdgcoille, June 28,1826. i Sin—A paper of this merning, printed at this place containing a letter purporting to be addressed by your Special Agent, to the Agent for Indian Affairs, in extenuation ofliis conduct in suspending him from his functions under your instructions, is tor- warded for the in formation of the President. If iu writing such a letter the Special agent has so acted as to find himself within the letter or spirit of those instructions, it is ob vious that the question which he wos chnrg ed to investigate had been prejudged at Washington, before his departure from that City, and that consequently the govern ment of Georgia can no longer, consistent ly with its dignity, hold intercourse with that, officer, of which as you wilt see by tho enclosed letter he has had due notice. Respectfully, G. M. TROUP. The Honorable J. lUnnouR, 'Secretary of iVar. FxECtTTtVE DrP.VHTVEET. 1 JttilUotgerilie, 28/A Jane, 1025. Special Agent—Creek Agency. The philanthropists who profess to be rea dy to taka the Indians and negroes into their bosoms, we hope will not be silent un der the injurv tire General Government is about to indict on the Creek Indians — Goorgia has been thoroughly castigated for her anxiety to obtain tho Creek lands. Wc will now see whether these men ure sincere in their professions; whether they will re sent a real injury.done to the Indians by the United States government, as boldly as they ha vo pretended to resent an imaginary one done to the same people by Georgia; in a word whether they will deal with the Uni ted States as, under circumstances imagin ed to be similar, they have dealt with Geor gia. The facts to which we call their at tention are these:— The United States obtained a cession of land from the Craeks in February last. By the treaty, the United States promise to pay to the Indians who made it, $400,0110', us a remuneration for improvement abandoned by them, and losxus sustained in removing beyond the Mississippi. For the land ce ded, the Unilcd States givo other lands, a- cre fur acre. Part of the Indians remain here and consequently sustain no lose, ei- their for improvements nbnndoned, or in any other way. Yet the U.'States government has decided that the money is to be paid to those who remain, as well as to tlioso tlmt remove!!!
