A. I know them to be respected as such
by the authorities of St. Thomas, and that

of Agents. How they got their appoint

Cabot to take depositions, and, iu his ab
sence to deputise Mr. Bailey.

Q. Had not the Island of Porto Hico, and
particularly the district about Foxardo, been
notorious by common report as a receptacle
for pirates who made it icndeivous and de
pository for their goods?
A. Yes sir.
Q. Were not these reports communicated
to me, aiul did I not receive many complaints
of the depredati ns committed?
K. I had understood from the most respec
table merchants of St Thomas, previous to
mv written report to Com. Porter, that the
place was noiorirus. A brought no letters to
the Commodore on the subject, hu it was re
ported hat the Island afford® I protection to
pirates; that the plunder was carried to that
place, and the people were believed to be
parties concerned with the pirates The mer
chants referred me to persons who had let-

Q. Did they say any thing about their hav
ing letters in their possession stating the fact?
A. Yes, they said they had certain docu
ments at that time to prove the Tact

A. i do not know. 1 was in another vessel,

when our party landed. 1 do not know what
our men did afterwards.
q. Was not the most perfect orde pre-

Q. Was any violence or injury of any kind

or property of the inhabitants?
A. None whatever.

quitted their ranks.

is not a sale worth mentioning. Our prices

month of April. Our stock is 10,000 bags
larger than last year at this lime.

preciation of tho article. Large supplies are
