It. is a glorious characteristic of our free VftHiiliitioui*, that there is a resort, even when the artful anil the interested and the corrupt, have succeeded in poLnning the y.iblic mind, by which a hearing may be ob tained. An appeal to the good sense and natural love of justice ot the American com munity, is sure to bo rewarded with a pa tient hearing and au honOst decision.-— There is no truth better established among ail the maxims which have proceeded from the snme venerated source, than that “ er rors of opinion may bo tolerated when rea son is left free to combat them for, where reason is thus left uutruiuclled, its triumph is certain. In this country, we thank the Ga l who aided and guided our fathers to flic consummation of their struggles, for th • freedom we enjoy, there is no tribunal *n jorinr to that of its free citizens—there js no power eqwi to that of public opinion— there is no punishment which will burn und blight and sear more deeply and effectually than the virtuous indignation of the people. h it not, therefore, surprising, if every citi zen of Georgia feels au anxiety deep and heartfelt, fur the reputation of that, state, in whose prosperity all his hopes are. centred, and in whose good name he should feel the inMtrust whicii a dutiful child should feel, when hn finds the character of his parent assaulted and maligned, and in danger of destruction. If is nnr right—it is our duty to step forward to receive the shaft and re pel it. In the remarks which it is my iu- ten ion to mike, it will be understood that I act on perfectly independent ground. I am not a partisan.- in the common accepta tion of the term—-l wear no man's livery—I am the champion of nu individual—I adopt tiie cause, und ns far us inv limited iibiluioa permit advocate tin* claims to the friendship oii’l atlVtion of their fellow-citizens of n vhoie state with which l am satisfied to rise or fill!. AU we. ask is a fair hearing—we plead not before the high tribunal before which we ciiouse to appear—we simply lay our evi dence before it and rely with confidence upon the justice of our cause, uiictnhcllisli- ed, unembarrassed, unincumbered—in the pure, robe of truth and sincerity. ’l*o judge by the* remarks and expressions of some among those whom we address, tluwpeople of Georgia, and, indeed, tho & uth generally, arc considered a distinct, twee; as foreign in manners and morals to ticir happier fellow-citizens of the North. The besetting sin of those who accuse and stigmatise us is—they know nothing of'our character and our institutions ; and this ig norance is not confined to those among wlmm we should look for ignorance and pre judice. There is a spirit of relentless fannt- iri-m ton, abroad, which operates upon the niasB, creating an excitement in the public niiiiil, which finds vent, in the basest cal- u,n,i y and injustice. This feeling is most unfortunate—it has created a correspond tng fueling of anxiety and distrust, whicii renders thu public mind in the south, puin- | tally alive to the attacks of those who set themselves up us our judges and expurga tes, in matters and things exclusively our • Wn » and with which wo never will and °" v, 'r can suffer any interference, consist- eutly with out rights and safety.
