PREFACE TO TIIE ABOVE WORK.
T HE following Answer! srere, amongst 0-

ring th j Isst winter, with s view to remove
the doubts of the timorous Christian, quicken
iiim in the way to Z m, to guard ogidoit pre
sumptuous hopes, sod promote thelife of reli
gion in the soul. That these important ends
might be answered, the auditory were desired
to supply us with serious Gases J Conscience,
arrising irom the d.fficultiea they met with ir,
the course of their experience, and toconceal
their nimei, that so they might, with the
greater freedom, propose their respective
Cues, and that we, in our solution of them,
might be kept from the least degree of fear or
restraint.
Through the repeated importunities of our
friends, and from satisfactory evidences of use
fulness, we have been prevailed upon to com
mit to public view a select number of these
mswersj though somewbst contracted. And
we I ope, that those, into whose hands the>
may com-, will read them with Christian can
dour.—And may the Spirit of God, without
whose peculiar blessing all attempts will be
mcffecltqd to answer any saving purposes,
make thect a powerful means of bringing them
nearer to Christ, and of making them mote,
lively and active in his service! If this happy
end is but in the least answered, we shall re
joice, and give God all the glory, disregarding
all ihe little contempt that msy be cost upon
us and our imperfect labouie.
It must he acknowledged to be a very dlffi.
cuK ai d critical work to distribute to every
one their proper portion, and so to divide the
word of truth, as to give suitable encourage,
ment to those to whom itbelongl, and yet to
leave the hypocrite or presumptuous sinner
no room to hope. It is equally difficult to at
tempt to destroy the vain confidence ofthe
sinner, without disturbing the peace, and dis
couraging the minds of those who are the real
followers of Jesus. Who is sufficient for these
things i We readily coofeis our insufficiency;
