arrived at Plymouth on the 20th ult. front
Talcahuano.'was, on the 15th August, 18*4.
■truck near the floor timber heada about
midships. by a aword fish. Captain Myricx
gives this account of the cireumsteuca.—
The sword Of the fish struck the chip with
lucli vtoictich as to' peas through 3- lth inch
pine sheathing, 3J inch white oak' plank, n
9 inch white oak timber, and a 2) inch while
oak coiling into the ship’s hold ; whon it
passed through a stick of pine wood 3k in'
dies thick, and thonce through a white ask
one inch stave, into tin oil husk, leaving the
point the distance of an inch and a hall into
the oil. The sword broke off 2 or 3 inches
from the outside of the ship and remained
in that situation during a cruise of about
ten months, when it was discovered in the
harbour of Tnlcahnano. During this time
the ship lesked. mi moderate weather 250
and when sailing quick u' o it 180 strokes
in hour. The form of the sword is oytl,
snd the part which Temnined in the ship’s
plonk wus about twelve inches, in circum
ference. The part which perforated the
cask completely jillcd the hole which it made
s. as to prevent any leakage of the oil with
which it was filled.
