‘ Charleston, July 30.—Wo learn from
an attentive friend at Santee, that a large
gang of runaway negroes, who have infested
the Parishes of Christ Church and St- Jntnpu,
(Santee) for several months, and committed
serious deprdations on the properties of the
planteis, was recently accidentally discover
ed by a party of gentlemen whilst out m the
pursuit of deer. There were four or five
f camps, containing in all not less than twenty
negroes, One of the fellows, in consequence
of his oi>n obstinacy and audacity was fired
at by ono of the party, and billed. The rest
retreated, and all succeeded in effecting their
escape, except four, who are said to belong
to a gentleman of this city. There are sev
eral other particulars given in the communi
cation, which we deem it unnecessary to
mention. We trust that the inhabitants of
the Parishes will not cease their exertions
until the evil shall be effectually removed.

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT,
Qffi.cc of the Charleston Courier,)
August 3.—4jp m \
Colton—Tn Long Staple there was very
little done : we have heard of the sale of on
ly three or four small parcels of Maine, at 18
a 19 cents. Upland Cotton remains about,
the same as at our last; 7 a 9 cents contin
ues the range, though the sales of tho week
were very limited. The stock of Upland now
in this market is less than at tho same season
for a number of years past, and as shipments
continue to be made on country account, it
is expected the 6tock on the 1st of October
will bo very low.
Rice.—The Rice market was dull, except
for fresh beat, which has found buyers about
as fast as it was received. There was no
prime in market. Thr sales of inferior to
good, were at 2 a 21; we therefore continue
to quote prime nominally $21; inferior tn
good, ^'.2 a 2$.
Export of Kice for tho week ending 25th inst.
West Indies, 376 cusks.
Flour has declined, several lots of Iresh
ground having arrived in the week, we now
quote best brands, 61 a 61.
Com.—Two cargoes of Corn, about 5000
bushels arrived from Baltimore in the week,
one was very prime, and brought 75 cts. tlv
other was sold at 64 cents, wo quote 60 a 66
cents.
According to tho City Gnzottc tho Stocks
on hand in Charleston on 1st inst. wore 1761
bales Sea Islands, Maine and Santee Cotton,
3282 bales Upland do., and 5061 bhls. Rice.
