abundant. The only one about which
doubt* w*ro tbit, early in tho soason, was
that of corn; but tho rooont warm weathor
dissipate* them, and leaves the husbandman
do cause for apprehension or repining: yet,
repining, we fear, there will be—repining at
eacosaiye abundance. There it poaco every
whore* universal labor, and low prices. Yet
as low price* are not confined to agricultural
produco alone, but eatood to all tbo. neces
saries nod luxuries of life, the cultivator of the
•oil should reflect, that he is in no worse
pligMdn that account, lliso the mechanic,
or tno merchant, wboso labors yield no
greator return than his j and who must be
conteot, as woll as himself, to work cheap,
and live well, as all that are industrious and
sober can do. A. Y. American.
^ Fur tho CharoBUw Mercury,
Tire South Carolina . AssuciATion.—
Tho imporlaoco of this Society in protecting
the property and promoting tho interest ot
South Carolina, is steadily, though perhaps
slowly, developing itself. The fact is well
Known to every observer of passiog events,
that our peculiar polity is beset with enemies
on oVeiy side—fanaticism and ignorance of
tho real condition of those whoso pretended
benefit is the object of solicitude, have gone
band in band to injuro them, aod in that in*
jury to overturn the government and subvert
the interest of the slate. We do not allude
only to tbe open efforts ot the Colonization
Society, but .to the secret efforts—some un
der the cloak of religion-which are made at
our very door*. Cull to tnind the alarming
crisis which brought the Association into
existence, and then let it be asked if an en
gine as powerful as tho Association might be
come, if all would give it that support which
their own individual interest demands, is uol
of the first importance. Carolina is bound
by every tie of duty and salt preservation, to
counteract by every means in her power, the
‘^secret underminings of her prosperity by her
enemies; and what more powerful engine
\i pan she employ for this purpose than tho As
sociation. Her enemies have established o
parent Society to colonize aod free her slaves
—with Branch Societies to proinoto its
vicwB, wherover they can be established.—
No stone is left unturned—no means, howevor
humble, are neglected, which can contribute
to tbo accomplishment of its ends—The pul
pit and the forum—the\tiact and tbo volume,
are all brought into requisition to accomplish
the end in view—freedom of our slaves ; and
shall the reproach be applied to us that we
fold our arniB and cry “peace, peace, when
there is no peace.”.
The Association, if our planters and others
would only add to its funds,*ini£-ht become a
powerful auxiliary io apprehending runaway
negroes, and in detecting flagrant crimes a
u.oiig thebe people in our families, and on our
plantations ; but to accomplish these ends,
nmplo fund3 mi)6t bo at the Society* 1 com
mand. In other countries an effective po
lice can only ho had but by a liberal expen
diture of money ; and if countries freed from
slavery are willing to advance largo sums
to protect themselves, or to bring to justice
violators of the law,how much moro imperious
is this duty.00 us, whose very property, yea
life, depends no the good conduct and subor
dination of a large portion of our population,
who have not hiug lu do with sdf-^ov* rn-
ment, and who have only one primary law to
observe—obedience.
W^hamcarrietl our introductory remarks
further than wo intended. We had three
points principally »n view when wo com
menced:— i
let. To suggest the propriety of publish
ing the highly interesting Report of the
Chairman of the Standing Committee of tije
Associotioii, read ut thq last Anniversa y
meeting, for tho benefit of our citizens, aid
to subserve the general interests of the 8 >-
cioty, which we thiult it admirably adapted
. to* \
i 2dly. To call the consideration of the As;
r sociation to tbe importance of establishing
Branch Societies throughout the State : and
also, to call the attention of Georgia one
North Carolina to tho establishment of simi
lar Societies—for wo hold it all-important
that there should be concortin action aB wcl
as union in feeling in all our slave-bolding)
States.
3dly. That tho attention of tho comlmni*
y requires to be called more particularly to
the importance of the Associalionof tbe State,
ihd the supplying it, with nmplo funds, for
the limit to its usefulness can only be tho
ant of pecuniary mcaus to carry its enlarg
ed views into effect. Wo have often heard
tho question asked by persons who never
contributed a cent to carry its objects into
effect, “Where ib tbo Association ?” when
any infringement of tbo Law had come to
their knowledge, which they thought came
under the cognizance of the same.
We understand that several points of im
portance under tbe quarantine laws relating
to this city, havo been solemnly adjudged by
the Board of Health—the questions having
been taken by yeas and nays.
1. It is determined (hat Sugar in casks,
coming from Havana, New Orleans. &c. m
a healthy vessel need not be removed to
gomo place out ofthc ciiy, nor undergo the
process of purification, but that Sugar in box
es, coming from such ports, though in a
healthy vessel, mu6t undergo ventilation and
cleansing.
2. It is determined (hat Sugar, both in
casks and boxes, coming from such ports, in
a vessel in which any death has occurred on
the voyage, cannot be landed io the city, but
must he taken somewhero else, and be ven
tilated and cleansed.
3. It» decided that iron, lead, and above
all tobacco, coming from such ports, iu vessels
injwhich deaths have occurred during the
voyage, must bo ventilated and cleansed.
4. A merchant applied to tbe Board for
permission to bring 20 puncheons of rum into
tbecity from Brooklyn, which was imported
from New Orleans in a vessel in which sev
eral persons died on tbe voyoge, but it was
decided that it should not be brought over.
5. It is said that smoked hams and tongues,
imported in tbe same vessel, are under the
eame sentence of condemnation.

Ireland.—Kilrush, June 13.—Mr. O’*
Connell left Kilgorey at a very early hour
this morning, nodor tho expectation tbot bo
might arrive at this town before the people
would have time to assemble from tbe differ
ent parts of tbe country. On arriving with
in fivo miles of the town, about one o’clock,
be was met by the children of threo schools,
wbo marched in regular order, beaded by the
monitors dressed in green. Shortly after
wards his carriage was surrounded by the
most immense crowds I have ever witnessed
assembled together on any occaaioo. He
did not reach tbe main street until about 7
o’clock, which was excessively thronged on
hfs entry. When began to apeak, it was
calculated that botfteen 89,000 and 100,000
persons were congregated together. His
speech Was tbe best be had delivered during
bis visit to this country. Tbe town was
tastefully decorated with garlands. Great
preparations are now beiog made to have the
town, which is very spacious, splendidly illu
mtoaled. It is said that Lord James O’Brien
will certainly oppose Mr. O’Connoll. g*.
^Pbe following appears in a Perth, Upp^n
Canada paper of July 17. The Caoada pa
per* are noted for their many wonderful sto-
ries.
A puzzler von Solomon were he liv
ing.—We are informed that at a house in
Ramsay, where a woman was lately deliver
ed of a child, a neighboring farmer’s wifo.
who was lending her aid was instantaneously
taken io labour and was also delivered, a feu
minutes aftetwards. The children were both
of the ssmo sex ; whether inaleoi female we
don’t know. They wero put togothor, and
in tho buetlp of taking care of the women,
the midwife forgot which child belonged to
each mother. What was to be done in this
perplexing dilemma ? It was agreed be
tween the parties, that each mother should
take the child which fell to her by the deci
sion of lot, and him or her bring up, rear and
educate, until some convincing family likeness
appeared, by which they could arrive at a
moral certaiuty-»f their parentage, and that
nn exchange should then take plnco, if the
Delphic oracle oflut appeared to Imvo been
mendacious. _

High authority vor tight lacing.
Lord Bacoo, iu his observations on the
“Helps towards tho Beauty and Good Fea

meats of pressure, by which animal bodies
inay bo made “more comely and better fea

for young women, by wearing “stiaight bo
dies, to keep thoinselves from being gross and
corpulent” H»w those “strait bodies”
were fashioned and adjusted, or whether the
requisite pressuro was effected by steel or
whalebone, tho philosopher does not tell us,
but lie ovidenlly considered the practico not
only harmless, but creditable to tho good
taste of the ladies. At tins time, when tight

aod warnings loud and frequent aro Bounded
