Guulhuiiuii whilst sojourning with in for 20 years as a teacher of our wives, (1 beg the Editors, Srs. pardon !) ami daughters, hus stored his fruitful mind with imiclt useful and varied in formation. He proposes to publish a statistical account .Georgia, and for that purpose has extendedliil travels und acquaintance throughout the State; and it is at once delightful ami instructive to listen, not to dry columns of figures, numbers of ri« tierces, or eotton hales, Init to the many am*- Fatal Accident.—YVe are informed by a passen ger who came down the Georgia It. Gaston.—This beautiful steamer made its first trip for tho season upon Florida wuters, on YVcdnosday last, und delighted its old friends by its improved appearance, it has been complete ly fitted throughout with a now boiler and new carpentry work, and has been tliorougly repainted. Its boiler was made by Air. A. N. Alillor, of Sa vannah, and is said to ho tho first low pressure boiler which has buon made iu tliut city, while its cost was no greater than that of a boiler built utthc North. Tho Gaston remains under tho command of Capt. Alendell, one of the most energetic and ob liging of men. It lenvcs;8ayannah every Tuesday morning ut 10 o'clock, and is intended, wo under stand to run to I'alutka, uud the intermediate pla ces, carrying passengers and frioght. YVe wel come thu Gaston as one oftho two best boats upon tho river.—Jacksonville Neics, 15th inst. Wo understand that letters havo been recently received from Alujor Hobhic, who will probably return to tho United States in tho YY'uihington steamer. His last letter was from Bremen. He was then on his way tp London. He had made the most satisfactory arrange ments iu Germany for the accommodation of our steamers and tho transmission of tlieir letters. llisarrangemonts with Franco wore not posi tive concluded; but he hoped to liud u satisfactory answer to his propositions to that govcrumeiit on his return to London. Ho had found u very conciliatory spirit in most of the English statesmen—iu Lord Joliu Russell, foroxamplo, and Sir R. Peel; but tho superinten dent of tho Post Olliee Department had felt some difficulty in ucccdiug to the terms until tho meeting of Parliament. A proposition hail been mado, during tiio absence of Air. Baucrofl in Switzer land, to Air. Brodhcad, the secretary of legution for a temporary suspension of the order of our PostmaJter General in relation to tho letters des patched to Canada; but Air. Brodheud hud doelm- ed according to it, unless the British Post Office would also do away with tho inequality iu the postago of letters landed iu England from our steamers. It was hoped that tho liberal spirit of tiiu government would ultimatojy romovo all diffi culties on tho 'subject, and bring ubout, an ar- ' " dory to our guvermnuut. £ Washington Union, Vith inst. 423 LOWNDES.
