SAVANNAH.'
_ J^tyrta^pingtcar*-—
Those of our contemporaries North, South and
West, who have noticed in such flattering terms
tha new dress of The Georgian, with which friends
BnuOz & Co. of NewYork supplied us, nro en
titled to our warmest regards. By continued in
dustry we hope to make the Georgian acceptable
to the Fraternity, os well as the public generally.
Our Reading Room is supplied with the papers
of tho principal cities, and wo invite our friends
at home to suggest the addition of auy others.
Editorial Mistakes.
Tho editors of the N. Y. Journal ofCommerce,
and of the N. Y. Alirror, havo extracted a portion
of our notice of the launch of the ship E. Z., from
the ship yard of Alessrs Barclay and Townsend,
at Hoboken, and credited opr friends of the Ro.
publican. As tho latter paper has been frequent,
ly mistaken for ours and vice vena, wo notice this
trivial error merely to put our contemporaries
horeafler on the right track.

Steamer Wrecked.
The St. Matthews, Cnpt. AfcNelty, arrived on
Sunday morning with tho passengers, fourteen in
number, and mostofthe crew of tho Xdrragansett,
Cnpt. Wilson, which steamer was wrecked on tho
aflornoon of Thursday,21s( ulL, about 4 o’clock,
near Alosquito Bar, East Florida. Tho Nurra-
gansott left Charleston on Wednesday (20tli) at
8 o’clock, A. AI. with fine weather, and passed
St. Augustine next morning about 10 o'clock.—
She had a smart breeze during tho day and about
4 o’clock, P. AI. the Captain tried to make the
harbor of Mosquito.
Tho Captain ordered one of tho life boats low
ered, in which he jumped and took in all the la-
dies, anil reached the shore in safety. Tho Cap
tain did uo| return, but two of the deck bunds re
turned in the boat in which nud n second life boat,
both of which soon filled with water, the passen
gers in a wet stnto reached the shore. Mr. Wal
ker, tho steward, jumped into one of tho boats
and took a lino ashore by means of which and
another from the steamer, they were enabled to
pull the boats alternately ashore. It was soon
dark and tho crew workud manfully and carried
ashore in the boats all the baggage, mattrasses, &c.
That night the pnssengersand crew hud to sleep
on tho beach, a tent from a sail being made for
the ladies. Next morning thoy proceeded to Air.
Stamp’s plantation, about three miles distant,
where every attention was shown them, tho pas
sengers speaking in tho highest terms of his kind
ness.
The succeeding day all the pnssengers started
for Enterprise, on Lake Alonroc, about thirty
miles olT, and encamped the first night in the
woods, after travelling, at times through swamps
three miles in water, the ladies being in a wagon
furnished by Air. Stamp. On reaching Enter
prise they partook of die best the country could
afford, and after four days sojourn there reached
Jacksonville in the steamer Sarah Spalding, Cnpt*
Stevens, where Air. Daniel Avory furnished the
crew with a bariel of pilot breud and a cheese,
which did much to comfort the poor fellows. In
the steamer St. Matthews all tho passengers and
most ofthe crow reached our city, tho crew in a
destitute condition, having each but n small bun
dle of clothes. Air. Walker, Steward, saved but
little of his effects. Aluch credit is ascribed to
tho noble conduct ofthe deckhands, and especially
Air. Timothy Boole,to whoso exertions the passen
gers principally owe tho preservation of thoir bag
gage-
The officers and crew ot tho Nnrrngunsctt.who
arrived in the St Afatthews, return their thunks to
Cnpt. AIcNelty for his attention while on board,
uml for a free pasage from Jacksonville.
The Nnrrngansett was bound to New Orteuns
via Key West.
The following is a list of tho pnssengers who
arrived in this city by the SL Afatthews:
Henry Lindsey, lady, child nml servant, Mrs
Wright, child and servant, Mrs. Matthew's,
Airs. Parslegquc and child, Captain, and Mrs.
Woodruff, child, and servant, A. F. Miller,
C. D. C. Rhind, J. Gleason, Thos. W. Wriggs,
Dr. Gillingham, Geo. Flick, Wm. Ilarrcnau.
l»rr«4r*lllnUiro»«t Accident.
A fearful and fifttl .uccldont occurred on the
Vermont and Massachusetts Rntt Road, on tho
evening of the 26th ulL, iu the vicinity of Royal-
A freight train, consisting of an onglno and two
cars; loadod With railroad iron, was crossing a
now bridge built oVer Millera’s Rivor, when tho
bolts which fastened the bridge drew out, and tho
bottom ofthe bridge, together with the engine and
cars, was precipitated into the river. Air- Charles
Field, an engineer upon tho road, states that the
accident occurred on a bridge between South Roy-
olston and Athol; thot tiro bridge was built by
Alessrs. Boody Sc Stone; that it had been care-
frilly examined previous to passing over it, and
believed to be pcrfcotlysafe; and that file, cause
‘froth Pennsylvania, and assist to brandish tho in
cendiary torch; and ho‘'did comb,, nml made an
inflammatory speech at tho Convention. It is
true jthat they abused tlib ticket and somewhat
obscurely advised their friends to vote tho Whig
tickot, but they nutde mtf ticket bf tlicir own.—
And why did they not! : Because thoy did. uot
daro.makean exhibition of thejr weakness. They
are now secretly imploring their Whig friends
to turn out in all their ibreo and vote down tho
Democratic tickot. and if thoy fear that the Whig
veto will bo but feeble; they will jump into tho
broach and trip it up by their own votos. How
molaucholy it is to see the men who havo grown
rich on tho confidence of tho Democratic party,
who for thirty years havo had a surfeit, a veiy
apoplexy of office, now, in tho last hourofthoir
political lives, going leiauroly over to tho enemy,
act with him, co-operate with him, thus forming
n coalition similur to tho ouo they made with
Burr and Clinton in old times, ••a union of hon-
bftho accident wa. the imporfuctionor ^lloiron g ffRiB
Southern in all his votes, is honest iu tho support
ofthe Wilmot Proviso 1
used for the rods in tho, centre of tho bridge.—
Six persons are known to A havo boon killed, viz:
Mr- Woodbury, the engineer, Air. Benj. King,
of West Acton, (who has left a wife and three
children,) Air- Thompson, of Acton, Air. Wiley,
of Buldwlnsville, Air. If untoon, formerly of West
Acton, nud another, nnmo unknown.
Air. Whitmore, ticket master at Baldwinsville,
is badly burnt; nlso Air. Reynolds, track repairer.
Tho firemau, Mr. Patch, of Littletqn, escaped
with the leust injury, and is getting along very
comfortably. The fall was about 40 feet, and tho
engine and cars still remain in the river. Ifthero
aro more dead bodies, they uro beneath tho cars.
The packet ship Constitution, from New York
for Liverpool, took about $100,000 in gold. Tho
Garrick, for the same port, had about tho sumo
amount.
A Board of Naval Surgeons is now in session
Philadelphia—Dr. James M. Green presiding.
Candidates are invited to report without delny,
Tho Washington Union of Thursday night
contains an official notice, which states that tho
General Court Martini directed to ussomblo nt
Fort Alonroe on tho 2d day of November next,iu
tho case of Lieut. Col. Fremont, of thoMounted
Rifle Regiment, will meet,on the day appotuted,at
the Arsenal, in Washington city, instead of Fort
Monroe.
Departure of Troops.—Tho Mobile Register of
the 28th ult. says—The U. S. transport steamer
Beaufort District, sailed for Vera Cruz on Tues
day last, having on board 74 men and horses;—
and yesterday tho Gulvcstou and die Alary Burt the
former with 108, uud the latter with 135 men and
horses of the Georgia battalion, departed for tho
same destination.
The Bishop.—As we understand it, fiicro is uo t
now the slightest chance for tho restoration of
Bishop Onderdonk. He will probably receive
an answer from the Board of Bishops to tho let
ter he addressed them complaining of injustice,
which will exhibit their opinion oil this point.—
Wo aro happy to learn that the discipline which
has been exercised towards the late Bishop On-
derdotik, of Pennsylvania, has had the effect of
working a thorough reformation in him as to the
practices which caused him to be deposed.—X.

The proceeding* of the Herkimer Convention
will now strengthen the Democratic ticket, and
show to file Democracy ofthe State the hollow-
hoartedness of tho opposition made to it—it will
show tho Democracy that thoy did not daro to as
sail tho candidates ou their ticket, their character
or capacity, but merely contenting thomselves
with ubusiiig tho Convention and voting tho Wil-
mot Proviso. We are glad that the masks are ofT,
that fite cloven foot is visible, and that these men
prefer an open coalition with tho Whigs to an
honest support of tho regular ticket made by the
Democratic party.

Lnt£r From Mntamoros,
To the courtesy of Mr. O’Donuell, from the
Brazos yesterday, wo are indebted for the Alnta-
morus Flag of the lGtlt iust. We make from it
the extracts following.
Tho epidemic has not abated any thing, spouk-
ing in reference to tho numbers it attacks. The
deaths, though, aro comparatively few, for it
easily yields to medical treatment.
A correspondent at Reynosa informs us, says
the editor of tho Flag, of tha murder of a young
Alcxicuu of thut town, on the night of tho 7th iust.
The young man was in attendance at u private
K at the house of a friend, aud standing with
clc to an open door, gazing ut the waltzcrs,
who were circling round tho room, when some
unknown person stepped up to tho door and fired
n pistol at him, putting two balls into his left
shoulder, which penetrated to his chest, and
cuused his deutli. The murderer was seen by a
youth who wasstnuding near the^oor, anu is
stated to have been a .Mexican.
Col. Randall arrived iu AlaUtmoros on the loth
having safely deposited iu Monterey the Govern
ment funds of which he had charge, and is now en
route for Vera Cruz. Capt. Cnrleton, 1st Dra
goons, had also come down from ubovo bound
for Vera Cruz. Likewise, Capt. Arnold, 2d
Dragoons, on furlough.
The road between Catnargo and AI mterey is
repro eated as undisturbed, aud the troop* at Mon
terey uud Saltillo arc in good health.

Tho fact stated below in a Pittsburg paper, that
produce has to be sent thence to the Eastern Mar
ket via New Orleans, is the best practical argu
ment in favor of the completion ofthe Railroads
ofTonnessee, which will open a connexion with
Savannah and Charleston.
Oh for a Railroad.—Sixteen hundred barrels
of flour go to New Orleans to day hy the river,
and two hundred barrels of pork,—ull destined for
the Eastern market, and ull seeking an outlet ut
the EasL From New Orleans it will be necessary
to send it to New York or Pennsylvania again,
pahs, at great cost, and over a distance of several
thousand miles. A Railroud would save nil this,
mid turn the commerce ofthe West in a now di-
roetiom We observe also, that largo shipments
uro mukingto the East via Brownsville and Balti
more, mid this, of course, in consequence ofthe
damage to the canal.—Pittsburg Gazette.
They reported for president C. C. Cambre-
ling.
'i h 'y also reported sixteen vice-presidents and
four secretaries. Mr. Camhroleng was installed
president. Committees were appointed to pre
pare nn address and resolutions. A resolution
wa* offered, that {the convention will proceed to
nomiiinte a now ticket for State officers. It was
violently opposed by Wilmot, or Pennsylvania,
Van Bureu of New York, and other*, and de
feated. Wilmot’s speech wus a vindication of
his proviso, and a denunciation of its opposurs.
His language was inceiidiary, and his delivery
most passionate. While ho was speaking, sever
al men wero observed to bo in tears. The ad
dress was very long and read hy Mr. Van Btircn.
It will be found to bo an extraordinary document.
A great number of resolutions wore reported.—
The following was among the number:
Resolved, therefore, That in the territory of Or
egon, and in any territory hereafter acquired
by the Uuited States on this continent, neither
slavery nor involuntary servitude should bo ul*
lowed while it remained iiudcr the dominion of
tho Union, except for crime, whereof tho party
shall he first duly convicted.
A second resolution was adopted, culling a
State Convention at Herkimer on the 22u of
February next, for tho appointment of thirty six
delegates to the Baltimore Convention in 1848.
Address and resolution iiiiauimou*ly curried.
Messrs. Cuinbrolcng, Van Biircn, mid others
made strong anti-administration mid anti-slavery
speeches. Mr. Ritchie was denounced.
The convention adjourned at 8 o’clock in the
evening.

MOBILE, Oct. 27—Cotton.—The dullness no
ticed iu our roport of last Wednesday continued
during the first two days of tho week now closed.
Buyers demanded a further concession, but hold
ers refused to yield, mid consequently file trans
actions were almost totally suspended. Ou Fri
day, however, holders evinced a disposition to
give way, mid on Saturday they conceded jc. on
all descriplions, at which ratespurclihsewentered
the market, and, during file two days 2U00 to
2200 hales changed hands—tho largest portion
of which took place on Saturday. The rates es
tablished hy these transactions were ns follows :—
fair 9Jc., middling fair 9J, and middling sjc.—
The sales of the four days ending Saturday night
amounted, in the aggregate, to about 3000 hales.
By Monday’s mail we received a telegraphic dis
patch announcing the arrival at New York ofthe
French steamer Missouri, which at once put u
stop to ull operations here. Yesterday's mail
brought us tho fnU nccouiits by file Missouri, and
ulso informed us ofthe arrival at Boston of the
steamer Cambria with Liverpool advices to the
5th inst. This discouraging intelligence has cre
ated a panic in our own market, from which, we
fear, it will not for some day* recover. Not a
hale of cotton has been sold sliico it came to hand,
nor is there tho least disposition outlie part of
buyers to operate. After the letters by fite Cam
bria shall have boon received, it full knowledge of
tho oxtent uml inllncnce of tho failure* uttamed,
and tho whole nows digested, we hope to ho nldo
to report some business doing. In the present
state of affairs it is useless to nttomptto give quota
tion*. Tho new crop continues to come in ns
freely as could bo expected, in the present low
stage of our rivers, and are pleased to note n con
tinued improvement iu the quality. Our ac
counts of tho prospects of tho in-coming crop
continue to ho favorable, and the estimate o fits
extents nro daily becoming higher. There have
been light frosts in tho interior, not sufficient,
however, to do any injury to cotton.
Tho receipts of tho week are 405G halos, tho
export 1G0G hales, mid the stock on hand aud on
shipboard not cleared last evening 227G5 bales,
against 9303 bales same time lust year.
Rice.—Additional receipts during tho week
have caused a further reduction in price. We
quote, as tho ruling rates, 5 a Gc. per lb., with a
downward tendency. »
Freights.—Wc have to report two foreign en
gagement* this week—a bnrk has been taken for
Liverpool at fid., und another for Antwerp at ljc.
Coastwise for Ncw-York tho rate i* $1 50 per
bale—very little offering. A bark has been char
tered for Vera Cruz nt $2800 to carry Govern
ment stores. A bark and three brigs in port un
engaged.

The Hartford Convention
During fite war with England the old Federal
nurty made a decided effort to divide tho Union.
They hud long previously complained thut the
balance of power lay iu the South, and they
seized upon the crisis ofthe war, and nt the must
gloomy period of thut war, to cull together the
Hartford Convention, ostensibly to break down
till. timVIlP ill tllf. Sllllltll till, ill ■.nnlt.ti ... .i.*—* f
tho power of tho South, but iu reality to divide
tho Union, and malic a distinct and separate
treaty tcith England. Tho firmness of Gov.
Tompkins, who determined to march with the
army under hi* command and arrest every mem
ber fur high treason, the moment an overt act was
committed, alarmed tho malingers, and fitey sim
ply contented themselves with passing inflamma
tory resolutions and adjourning. That Conven-
' (1 since by
tiou has been execrated since by the whole coun
try, and its prime mover consigned to oblivion
uml contempt.
The nearest approach to the Hartford Conven
tion is tho Herkimer Convention recently assem
bled, with this difference, that the Federalist* of
tho Hartford Convention aimed it* attacks on the
South. The Herkimer Convention, in addition
to assailing the constitutional rights of the South,
attempted ulso to brenk down tho Democratic
party, with which party it protends to act. The
whole country will nt once perceive that opposi
tion to the regular tickot ofthe Syracuse Conven
tion was file mere apology of calling the Herki
mer Convention. If tins was not ho, why did
they not offer a ticket for tho support of their
friends ( If file regular ticket was fraudulent, it
was their duty to have made another. This they
did not do; but throw themselves upon the Wil
mot Proviso, uud invited the instrument of this
agitation—the cat put forth to Lake the chestnuts
