SATANNAH. MONDAY MOKNING, DEC. SO. 1917. IT* Com. Conner and family arrived in this city on Friday night from the North, and lefr on Saturday morning in the boat for Florida.' Fran Mexico. The latest account* from Slexico, are by the steam ship Virginia, which left Vera Crux on 7th in-*!, and arrived on Jlpndav last, at New Orleans. Our Extra from the Picayune office did not reaih us until Saturday night. Fears are entertained for the saJetv of the steamer Slaria Burt which had the bulk ofa mail on board, ths Norther of the 2nd io*t- having been terrific. The Inaugural' Address of Gen. Ansva, a* President nd interim of Slexico, calls upon all. without distinction of party, to assemble around the standard of their country., TfcsTnwralley ef Cenderrieg «*> War. This is to bn the most interesting question be fore the present Congress. In spite of the known and bitter opposition of the Whig party to Mr. Polk's ndmimstrariop^n spite of their evident**- position to sacrifice the chief interests of the coun try,for the promotion of their own purpose* in spite even of the Lexington manifesto of Mr. Clay, we do not for a moment doubt that the present Congress will vote n continued prosecution of the war, and that the necessary supplies will be furnished. The Whigs dare not bring the war to the'dishonorable close proposed by their lead er*. The manifestations on the part of the peo ple forbid iL The voice* of prominent Whig* in various portions of the country forbid if— The evident disappointment and disgust engen dered in the bosoms of many of his once zeal- on* supporters, by the'Lexington speech of Mr. Clay, loudly forbid it. The Whig leaders have been mistaken in the supposition which they seem to have formed that the war was unpopular with the masses of their own party. This war has furnished the most conclusive evidence to the world that the Americans are a highly patriotic people. It has shown to jealous nations that while we are the most prosperous people in peace, we are like wise the strongest people in war. In vain have the Federalists straggled to render the war un popular by dwclliug perpetually on its immense cost. The American who would fiy tq hi* anus to resist the unjust exaction ofa dollar for tribute, would readily sacrifice hundreds and thousands for the honor of his country. In vain have they perpetrated melancholy homilies upon the blood which has been shed, and the valuable lives which have been lost ia the battles “tice the Ca*«ueriac Ilera Cwncs.” Gen. Suilxds, whose name mil be cherished as one of the bravest af the brevets long as the warm current of patriotism courses in American veins, has been received everywhere on hi* route from Mexico with distinguished honor. At New Or leans, Mobile, &e.,hi* reception was cheering to the scarred and beroic soldier ofhb adopted conn- try. Instead of die hostile bullets which at Cerro Gordo, Churablsco, Chapnltepec, &c. almost de prived his counay of his noble spirit, he has from his coimtrymex in these States received the abun dant greetings ef grateful hearts. At AuguUi hi*reception was as cordial as ad miring Georgian* couU make it. The booming of artillery proclaimed his arri val. A large number of visitors crowded upon him in ihefortiuoon, “who were delighted (ob serves the Constitntbualist) with tbe suavity of hij manners, and his conversational powers. In the afternoon & levee was held at Masonic Hall, where a largenumber of ladies and gentle men greeted him. After retiring he received the honors due to so dbtingaUhed a brother from the Masonic fraternity.
