UPMii calling addition to Mr. Gliddon's ad
vorlisomcnt ill another column, we are happy to
welcome this gentleman's return to lecture n-
moitg us, with portfolios teeming with interest
ing and novel discoveries, collected during his
recent sojourn in Europe, on the most ancient
Monuments of primeval man, the hieroglyphic*
of Egypt. The printed programme announced
the commencement of his preliminary course
t4ea*Taylar noil Iho I'rauMunry*
As was to have boon expected, a number of
the Wldg papers of the North liuvo spoken «•
gainst the proposition of giving Gen. Taylor a
party nomination for the Presidency, utiles* bo
aliould see proper to leave Iho position ho has
heretofore occupied and consent to accept it as
such. The Now Vork Express says t
•• Wo know that Gen. Taylor, if elected upon
the letters that he has already wtUoii for publica
tion. would feel himself under no obligation to
illustrate Whig principles ill his administration ;
lint on the contrary, would feel, that to him, as
/•acharv Taylor, to uni. as the individual and not
as the Executive Representative of u country be
fore the world, was intrusted the august duty of
representing Ills own wishes, feelings, or impul
ses as dictated by his own judgment.
••Now, we are not willing to invest any man
now living with a moiiarchial power like that of
thus rrpresent ing himself, With such candidates
as Henry Clay uutl Winfield Scott before us—
thu tlrst with all the elements of a statesman, mid
tlie second with us much popularity as, and more
military glory than Gen. Tavlor, and both well
known mid long pledged Whig*,—wo lire nut
w illiug, we suv, to give 'them up lor any candidate
to he elected by what is called •spontaneous
combustion.* ”
This Is pretty strong language, and doubtless
indicate* the feeling of a large proportion of the
Northern Federalists. It is a fact too well known
to need demonstration, that tiny are the only
branch ofthu Whig party who are really control
led hy principle. Purely sellMt and corrupt to
that principle may he, it is nevertheless priori-
pic, and we can tlud in it aotn* fouo>i ••*•••«
to ease our reasoning ns to tUuir probable
course. The branch of the party at the South,
while servilely advocating the measures whirl
their Northern masters dictate, in order to retail
a position in the national party, aru prepared to
take up Gen. Taylor or anybody else who inn)
bo deemed available, whether his principles ari
known or not. They require no pledges as ti
his course after election—they do not even Ui-
*iro au expression of “his specific opinions 01
specific subjectsbki’okkiiaxii.” They are ready
to go blindly into his support, even though hi*
election should only insure a repetition of the
Bachiinalinu revelries of the Harrison triumph
closely followed by the hitter dose which Tybt
indicted upon them. Tim Northern Federalist!
aro contending for something morn than this.
The pocket nerre is excited with them. Tiny
are really contending for measures more tlun
for umii. and disappointed once,* they arc nut
disposed to run the same hazard again. The fol
lowing remarks of tile Express arc perfectly nat
ural and such as wo have already anticipated in
our columns.

It goes on to demand that General Taylor shall
commit himself to Whig principles—that ho shall
pledge himself to constitute a Whig cabinet ami

By this command we may obtain something
