I.1TERAUY GAZETTE; A \Vo.kly Jour-
mil, to be comuionced in Athens, (Jn., ou Satur
day, tho 13th day of May. Edited by William
C. Richards, There is not, south of the Poto
mac, a single Weekly Journul, whose sole object
is to develops and foster literary taste aud talent
in the South; nud this fact is certainly a sufficient
reason for au earnest attempt to establish such n
Journal. The failure of previous efforts cannot
be regard^! by the intelligent mind as an argu
ment against such an attempt. Those failures
may have boon, and probably were, tho result of
circumstances uo tonger exlstiug. The need of
such an organ in our midst is so universally ac
knowledged, that not to attempt to supply the
deficiency would indicate a disregard of Ut* signs
of the times scarcely more surprising than inex
cusable.
Tito progress of the ago and the rapid advance
inent of tlie South iu Commerce, Alauufacturcs
and Internal Improvement*, imperatively de
mand n corresponding advance in Literature.—
To aid in this grant object, it is proposed to es<
tahlUli a Weekly Journul at the seat of the Uni
versity of Georgia, and to rally around it the best
writers of the South. This, it is believed, from
many considerations, cau bo readily accomplish
ed.

of his able coadjutors ill the Orion .Magazine and
also of much other assistance from the most
prominent writers of the South. TheUazot'o

lected} and will comprise Tales, Essays, Sketch
es nfTruvel, Poetry, Criticisms, and a General
Mifcetluny of information in all departments of
Literature. Art and Science. Particular atten
tion will begivou to Scientific and Practical Me<
chatiic*.
In Meehanient execution it shall be surpaaed
by no contemporary, and the aid of the Fine
Arts shall not be wanting to eiihanae its attrac
tions. Portraits of Southern writer* and pit-
lures of Southern Life and Scenery will be pre
sented.
Tho editor confidently appeals to the frionds
of Literntnra in the South t aud ho Is happy to
announce that his enterprise Is one of no doubt
ful issue. By private otfort a large end generous
list has been obtaiued, and npwordsofOue Thous
and Subscribers havo pledged their support to
tho paper. Until this was accomplished the edi
tor was unwilling to publish his'Prospectus, but
it is now given to the public with the unequivo
cal ossuranco that the Gazette shall be perma
nent. It is earnestly hoped, therefore, that every
friend of Lettors in the South to whom this
Prospectus may bo sent will feel n special inter
est in procuring subscriptions; for it is important
that not merely a bare support be accorded to
such a work, but that it shall be so well sustained
as to afford to ita publisher the means and incen
tives for increasing its ottraetioua in eveiy suc
cessive volume.
TERMS.— 1. The Sonthern Literary Gazette
shall be published weekly, on a handsome impo
rial quarto of eight pages—printed from new type,
