The principal object in the establishment of
this Agouey is to set at rest In the most sntlsfitctory
nnd economical umntiur possible, the muimrouit
cluitns for properly which citizens of the Unitod
States really have, or ntnaglne they possess iu
England nnd elsewhere.
Tho efforts of dcsignihg and unscrupulous
men hava been actively engaged In influencingu
bolieC on this subject in many-quarters, with a
view to petty speculation; nun evidences of the
fact have been so frequently brought to light nsto
render it urgently necessary that uti office be es
tablished having for its object the satisfaction of
those who have been deluded, and tu establish
t]tc claims of such as arc the rightful heirs to
doubtful property, or that which is improperly
withhold.
Articles iu tho leading journals in the principal
cities of the Union ure frequently appearing,
headed “Townley Estate,” “A Great Fortune for
somebody,” ••Meetings of tho Houghton's ut
Worcester,” “Clutao meetings,” &c., &c., the
authors of which are generally lawyers seeking
practice, or adventurers, whose only object is to
feed upon public credulity, by producing nn ex
citement winch tuay realizu for themselves imme
diate gains, uud who are. generally speaking,
without the slightest knowledge of tho subjoins
they put forth.
Tho evidences of this being n fact nro every
where apparent, ns iu no ono single instance have
their ill founded expectations boon realized;
uod it is with a view to the correction of thiseyil
that the subscriber has affected tho most oxten-
slve arrangements to sntisfr* tho inquiring, ns we I
as tho curiosity of thosu, who, influenced by
fumily connections or otherwise, wish to pursue
tho investigation of matters ofrifii involving rc^
suits of the most stupendous magnitude.
As regards real estate in England, the bulk of
it is subject to tin! laws of Entail and Primogeni
ture; and ever since the revolution in 1088, the
principal estates have been subjected to the
clmngcs, which always ensue on revolution, con
fusion, nnd change* of dynasty; nnd although
there have bueu special laws passed for particu
lar purposes, all those who have reference to this
subject, and which wore passed subsequent there
to, are still available in cases of legitimate right.
It is not, however, intondml in this ndvertuo
ment, to refer uutecodcutly to tho American rev
olution of 1776. at which period, a great number
of persons entStlod in various ways to property,
abandoned tho sntuo by joining the revolutiohnry
party, This not, iu itself, wus sufficient to load
to confiscation where it wus directly held by such
individuals; but’wheu those abandoning the same
were next in succession to tho then possessors,
tho enso became altered; and alienation from
homo and family \vero made tho barriers to right
ful inheritance.
Another fruitful source of 'investigation is
found in the Uticlnimed Dividend Book of tho
Bank of Eiiglaud, and this furnishing os it does,
each English muno that has over existod asti hold
er of funded property, is the uiuiu reliance of the
Unprincipled traders in public credulity.
The modes of investment are exceedingly’
numerous iu all parts of Europe, but in Englaua
