One would be led to su^pbsd from perusing the
columns of our parly news-papers, from listen
ing to tho harangues of our party spoakers, or
from reading the accounts of scenes which are
sometimes enacted off the slugs in our largo thea
tres, that the Americans arc among the most ex-
citnblA people ill the world. And so they arc,
aud iu so lioiug are only true to tho great prin
ciple of Nature. Nations like individuals need
excitement, must hare excitement, and if they
canuut get it hr otic way will seek it in another.
As soon as a people loso their lovo for excite
ment oV their cnpacity for excitement, Unit mo
ment they have lost a great principle of power,
forcound vitality, and begin to deteriorate in all tho
Clements of national greatness. The ancient
Rofnans waged their wars for centuries upon all
tho surrounding nations of the globe ? when the

siderable amount of party asperity, ainl in tho

Why is not tho Theatre open—so thnt we can test

let the Theatre be opened! We believe there is

To destroy the passion for nutional excitement,
is to destroy an element of national energy and
grentness. In vain to a people, with a character
thus crippled and mutilutetl, shall come the nppcal-
of patriotism, when the very excitement which has
been smothered in their bosoms is necessary to the
vindication of the national honor, or nveu to the
defence' of the national soil. Consequently, to
gratify thnt pa*siotvfor-excitement in the proper
manner becomes a subject of momentous con
sideration to tho sovereign power of-this coun

Away, then, with any philosophy, say tv'e, which
does not cultivate to a proper extent all tho natu

court and endeavor to practice tho philosophy
which shall conduct these emotions thrangh the
