T HE WIPE’S FRIEND.—-Important
to those about to become Mothers.—Professor
ALEXIS V. PAULITAN, ofthe Paris Lying-in
Hospital, member of the Medical Academy of
France, Corresponding Secretary of the Paris
PharmncenticoJ College, respectfully begs leave
to announce to the Ladies of America, that he
has appointed Dr. Jerome Y. C. Ropenhurtt,
of New York, his sole American Agent, for the
sale of his wonderful medicine, known in Frauce
as Tho Wife’s Friend, or Mother’s Assistant the
most extraordinary medical discovery the world
has ever seen. Its province is to Lessen tho
Pains of Child-Birth, and promote a safe, easy,
and speedy delivery, which it does by assisting
nature. It is perfectly harmless, efficacious,
pleasant to the taste, and never fails to promote
an easy and safe delivery, and improves the gen
eral health of both mother and child. It has been
tested foryears in all the principal Lying-InHos-
pitalsof Europe, and receives the sanction of
nearly all the’prominent Colleges and Medical
men ofthe old world. It is thegreatest medicine
in the world ; as all will admit that a medicine
muBt be that will lessen, thd terrible paius usually
attendanton childbirth. There is no mistake a-
bout this medicine doing all that is suid of it.
It never fails. It is in the form of a fine, light
powder, to be made into a drink, and used for a
few weeks previous to the expected event, and

OLD DR. JACOB TOWNSEND,
TUB ORIGINAL DISCOVERER OF TUB
Genuine Townsend Sarsaparilla.
Old Dr. Townsend is now about 70 years of axe, nnd bas
.ong been known as the AUTHOR aud DISCOVERER
uf the GENUINE ORIGINAL “ TOWNSEND SAR-
8APAR!LlJI.' t Being poor, he was compelled to limit Its
aianufnctare, by which means U has been kept out of mar
ket, and the sales eireninscribed to those only who had
K oved iu worth, and known its value.. If had reached
e ears of many, nevertheless, as those persons who had
been healed of sore diseases, and saved rrom death, pro
claimed IU excellence nnd wonderful
HEALING POWER.
Knowtny, many years ago, that he had. by his skill,
science and experience, devised nn article which would be
of Incalculable advantage to mankind when the inenns
would be furnished to bring it into universal notice, when
iu inestimable virtues would be known and appreciated.
This time has cotne, the means are supplied; this
GRAND and unequalled preparation
is manufactured on the largest scale, and Is called for
throughout the length and breadth of the land, especially
is it Is found incapable of degeneration or deterioration.
Unlike yonng S. P. Townsend's, It improves with age, and
uever changes, hut fur the better: because It Is prepared on
icientifie principles by a scientific man. The highest knowl
edge of Chemistry, and the latest discoveries of the art,
havo all been brought Into requisition In the manufacture
of the Old Dr’s Sarsaparilla. The Sarsaparilla root, It Is
well known m medical men, contains many medicinal pro
perties, and some properties which are inert or useless, and
others, which If retained in preparing It for use, produce
fermentation nnd acid, which Is Injurious' to the system.
Some of the properties of Sarsaparilla are so volatile, that
they entirely evaitomte and are lost in the preparation, if
they are not preserved by a scientific process, known only
to tbuse experienced in lu manufacture. Moreover, these
volatile principles, which fly otf in vapor, nr as an exhala
tion. under heat, are the very essential medied properties
ef the root, which live to It nil Us value.
Aiy person Can boll or stew the root dll they get a dam
eolored liquid, which Is more from the coloring matter t*
Sie root than from any thing oise; they can thoa strata
fois Insipid or vapid liquid, sweeten with sour tnolasser
and then call It •• SARSAPARILLA EXTRACT or BY
RtJP.” But such is not the article known as the
GENUINE OLD DR. JACOB TOWNSEND’S
SARSAPARILLA.
TJtls Is so prepared, that all the Inert properties of the
Sarsaparilla mot ere flrst removed, every thing capable of
becoming acid or of fermentation, Is extracted und rejected;
then every particle of medical virtue Is secured inn pure
and concentrated form; aud thus It Is rendered incapable of
losing any of its valuable and healing properties Prepared
In this way, it is made the most powerful agent Id the
Cure o( Innumerable diseases.
Hence the reason why wo hoar commendations on every
side In Its favor by men, women, and children. We And it

LODIAN—a new and elegant substitute
for Plaster cloths. Sutures, Bandages, &c.—This
article has been found by all surgeons who have
tested it, far superior and more convenient than
former means of dressing incised wounds. For
burns, sore Nipples, ana eruptive diseases, it
has proved extremely efficacious. It is also
much preferable to court plaster and gold beater’s
skin. It is not acted upon by water, andadheres
with almost incredible tenacity to the akin, keep
ing the edges of the wound closely together, and
causing it to heal with hardly a percejptible scar.
A history ofthe article, together with comma-

scribers, and nearly one million readers, that
Doctor Wiley’s Celebrated Cough Candy is
truly an excellent article. Read what it says:
“A Valuable Article.— Those suffering ftom
colds, will do well to procure a supply of Dr.
•Wiley’s Cough Candy, prepared only by Geo.
W. Childs & Co. We nave had a fair opportu
nity of testing the virtues of the candy in oar
own family, and. unsolicited, except by them, We
give onr experience. It is very pleasant to the
taste, without nausea in its effects, and almost
magical in its operations upon the affection.”
The above, ftom inch a source, we think is
enough to convince the most skeptical.
We would advise all who are in the least trou

from those complaints,-to be sure that they pur

8. P. Townsend’s FERMENTING COMPOUND.
We wish it understood, because it Is the absolute truth,
that S. P. Townsend’s ortlele and Old Dr. Jaeob Town-

similar; that they are unlike in every particular, having
not one single thing I* common.
As 8. P. Townsend is no doctor, and lever was. Is *o
chemist, no pharmaceutist—knows no more of medicine or
disease than any other common, unscientific, unprofessional
man, what guarantee can the public hava that they are re
ceiving a genuine scientific medicine, containing all the
virtues of tho articles need in preparing It, and which are in
capable of changes which might render them the AGENTS
of Disease instead of health.
Dut what else should bo expected from one who knows
nothing comparatively of medlelno or disease i It requires
