vention. Tills has vary justly roused alt
the • old prejudices, and so far from his
pidniiur his object, he has utterly failed,
and brought upon himself the displeasure
and resentment of every patriotic mind:
and as to the Convention, it is execrated •
•nd sunk in everlasting infamy in the j
mind of every one who loves the country.
T! e numbers of Mr. Otis will be duly an-
B’veivd, and the event will have the effect
ofurouRiW the republican party to a sense
Oi their duty to themselves ami country.
At first l was much displeased at seeing
that infamous, tre»s;»nably Convention
defended in the National Intelligencer,
but it lias tended to strip the veil from 1
Mr. Otis, and lie is distinctly seen in his
own naked deformity. You well know his 1
fnlavmin? mode of gulling the unsuspert-j
iugi and his continual dancing attendance j
upon leading republicans, and great af-j
fectatiun of moderation, has had the effect)
of deceiving too many. Hut he is now
recognised for a second time as a leading
lYiemb.v* of the Hartford Convention, and
is appreciated accordingly. This man
nlways finds his own level, and the popu
larity he once had in Fanucil Hall will
never extend beyond its walls.
*‘lt was to.f.if tiecessai v to adopt this
measure under the belief that it would
tend favorably to open the door again to
bring forward the celebrated Massachu
setts Claim. The Convention being con
verted into a emigre ration of patriotism
bv the magic wand of harlequin Otis, the
claim waste miss through the Congress in
glorious triumph in fliis signal ‘era of good
feelings.’ Hut alas, how uncertain are. all
the things of this life. The claim is lost
forever, and the Convenfien consigned to
everlasting infamy by the sober an J re
flecting of all mankind.”

PUBLIC MEETING
The largest and most respectable meeting
of citizens was held Inst evening at the City
Hotel, that we ever recollect to have witnessed
on a similar occasin. The resolutions were
preceded by an directing address from George
Griffon, Esq, and were seconded by a forcible
appeal, by the ltev. Mr. M’l.eod. The meeting
was animated with one spirit, that of affording
immediate relief to the distressed citizens of a
sister city* who, by a visitation of Providence,
are reduced to penury.
At a meeting; convened in pursuance of
public notice, in take into consideration
the distresses of our fellow-citizens, incon-
: cqUence of the recent calamitous fire at
^Hvnnnah. and the measures proper to be
taken for their relief—William Ha yard,
Esq, was appointed Chairman, &Chaulks
King, Ksn. Secretary.
When the meeting being organized, the
following resolutions were unanimously a-
dupted:—
Whereas intelligence has been received
of the destruction of a large portion of the
city of Savannah by fire, oh the 11th day
of.January, inst. by which awful and nl-

number of its inhabitants have been redu
ced, in an inclement season of the year,
from Competence and comfort to suffering
and want, even as is to be feared, of the
necessaries of*life*—Therefore,
Rrsolred, That this meeting feel a deep
sympathy in the 'misfortunes of their fel
low-citizens of Savannah, and a strong
desire, as far ns lies in their power, to
contribute to their relief.

appointed for the purpose of soliciting
contributions from the citizens of N. York

deficit has been much canvassed; but the
calculation varies from 30,000 to 00,000,

to the larger sum. The amount excites

the act itself inspires deep and deserved
indignation.
