SATURDAY MORNING, Fskriurt 12.
ami proper urcasiun, Baltimore should ex-
bibitits rear character, in such manner as
should silence the husv tongue of slander,
and vindicate itself before the world.—
lie trusted that it would never imitate the
unjust and illiberal spirit of jealousy, pre
judice and rriniination, which it had ex
perienced from its ai misers; that it would
never look with cold imliff'eretiee, on mis
ery and woe, under calamitous dispensa
tions, but would ever promplv extend to
them generous compassion and relief.
On the present occasion we are called
Upon to contribute to the relief of great
and pressing miseries, brought by an aw
ful and unexpected calamity, upon half
the inhabitants of a flourishing city, some
of whom may perish, whilst we are deli
berating upon the means of affording
them relief. Relief, to be in season fnr
•ume of them, must be prompt. Such
relief can he furnished on'v by the cor
poration, which cun nt once command anil
transmit funds. This, and that the city
may appear in its corporate character in
the transaction, are the reasons for the
first resolution; and it ia hoped there is
not a„ man mi Baltimore, who will not
cheerfully and gladly pay the small addi
tional tax, which this contribution by the
Corporation will render necessary.
The second resolution, whilst it will
necessarily he more slow in its effects,
sn’ill afford individuals the opportunity of
Indulging their generous and benevolent
feelings, in time to comfort and relieve
the afflicted: and notwithstanding the
pressure of the times,‘it is not to be
aoubted*tlie result of this resolution, will
be honorable to the donors and to their
city.
The citiiens of Baltimore would in
this instance, as in all others, spontane
ously, from generosity and benevolence,
»rt as became the occasion, and honora
bly to themselves; but it seemed on this
occasion not improper to remind them of
ttjiat was due to their reputation.
By the City Cuunoil of Baltimore.
, Resolved, That the application receiv-
.«d from the committee upruriiitetl at the
late town meeting, requesting this corpo
ration to transmit the sum of Ten Thdu-
sand D'lUar&to Savannah, for^e relief
of the .suffeit&g by the late fire in that
city,, propose^ an application of public
money to a purpose so laudable, that in
its refusal, we feel regret.
It is however due to ourselves, hud to
the, respect in which we at all times hold
auch a request from our fellow c’tizens,
to declare, that the proposed application
of the funds of this corporation, would, in
onr estimaiinn, exceed any authority poa

The Editor hastens to apologise to the read-
era of the G'orrriun, for the appearance in u late
number, of a piece under the signature of O,
A severe illness has for some time past render
ed him incapable of attending to editorial du
ties. He did not read this pieca until the paper
ontainltig it was issued. The opinions and
feelings it expresses ure by no means in accord
ance with his own—he holds the piece and its
evil tendency in abhorrence. Indeed, he hopes
and believes that his opinions and feelings on
that, in commoh with other subjects, are in
perfect unison with those of a very large pro
portion of his patrons, and with the interests
and policy of the Southern States. At th.
same time, when un expression of them is
required, lie hopes always to maintain his opi
nions with dignity; yet he shall ever feel and
pay the highest deference, to those of the
community, (from whom lie has derived so gen
evons a patronage;) on the present subject,
however, he repeats that his opinion is in per
fect harmony with that of those, whom it is his
interest and pleasure to please. He would
trample under foot that envious worm of the
dust, who would tarnish witlthi's own filthiness,
the bright renown of a revolutionary hero!
The Mayor has received from the Chair
man of the corresponding committee, at
Philadelphia, the sum of THREE THOU
SAND DOLLARS, for the relief of the
sufferers in this ci>y, by the late fire.
The Oratorio given at 1‘harleston, on Tues-
day evening last, although not so pumerously
attended as was anticipated, will, we understand,
net from Six to lUqht Hundred Dollars; two-
thirds of this amount, is to be appropriated for
the relief of the sufferers in this place, and the
remaining one-thiril for the suflereis at Wil-
mingtou.
We are authorised to state, (says the Nation
al Intelligencer of the 2d instant,) in reference
to a paragraph copied from ft Catskill paper res
piting fraud on the Pension Office, thht in eve
ry case where information that could be relied
on, has been received at the War Department,
touching a fraudulent transaction in obtaining
a pension, the name of the pensioner has been
dropped from the roll, or the payment of the
pension suspended. We can further state, that
no one nan obfaiu a higher pension than §240,
Under the act providing for oersons who served
during the revolution. That there are muny,
persurs pu the list of revolutionary pensioners,
whodo not “need the assistance of their country
for support,” there can be no doubt: but if men
will take false oaths, and Judges give Incorrec'
opinions, the War Department cannot prevent’
imposition. We are assured that the utmost
vigilance is kept Up them.

Melancholy Shipwreck.—A letter, dat
ed Yarmouth, N. S. Jan. 2, mentions the
following disaster in the gale .of the S 1st
Dee, The schooner Perseverence. Capt.
M‘Donald, loaded at St. Andrews, by
Mr. Millidge, of St. Johns, with a ett-go
of staves and lumber, bound for Jamaica;
this vessel sailed about the 29th ult. and
soon after, in a heavy gale, sprung a leak,
became water-logged, nml was capsized:
her main-mast sunn went by the board,
and with it three of her crew, who sunk to
rise no more, in -the merciless nbyss; the
captain, mate, anil two.others were saved
to undergo further sufferings—as, on the
vessels righting, they were left destitute
of provisions or fire, and remained for two
days longer, when all perished hut the
captain, through the accumulated pres-
ture of want, cold and fatigue. Bv great
exertions M'Dtttmhl got the vessel’s head
towards the bind,,and last evening she
was driven among the rocks, in a dreadful
surf, near the before mentioned place.
—Every exertion was made by the inha
bitants to get off'a boat; and five spirited
men made two efforts, at the risk of their
lives, to save that of the only survivor,
whose piercing cries were distinctly heard
bv them; their laudable and praiseworthy
attempts failed, from the violence of the
surf, and they had much difficulty to save
themselves Capt. M’l). bereft of this
hope, with singular presence of mind for
med a hasty raft of boards, & alter being
twice cast from it, at last readied so far
through the surf, as to be taken up by the
anxious spectators alive, though severely
bruised, and 1 am happy to say, the hu
mane attention shown him by those near
the fatal spot, is likely to do well.
