Awful Calamity.—On Tncsdiy night htst, a
small cabin on the north side of the Allegheny,
opposite tliis city, was entirely consumed, to*
f tether with all its contents. What udda to the
lorror of the scene, is that the people, of the
$dl60j house had just put their children to bed, and
left, the house for a few minutes to go to a neigh*
bops. a few rods distant. They bad been but a
short time absent when they discovered the
house to be in flumes! but alas, were unable to
reach it in time to save the children, three of
whom were consumed, and the fourth so much
burnt, as to be past all hope of recovery! The
owner, who was one of the laborers at the peni-
tentiaiy, in addition to this dreadful''calamity,
has, we understand, lost his all\—Jltercury,
Public Laiuh.—On the 3d September, 1819,
there remained due for Lands sold by the U.
States, the sum of nine millions, eight hundred
and sixty-eight thousand two hundred and nine*
ty-five dollars and forty-eight cents.
During the year 1819, 3124 deaths occurred
in the City and Liberties of Philadelphia. The
whole number of inhabitants is supposed to be
125,000.
Military.—Colonel Bankhead, with a number
of oilier officers, a detachment of troops, and
the elegant Italian Hand attached to his com
mand, suited yesterday, on board the U. S.sohr.
Tartar, Lieut. Com. Paine, for Amelia Island.
The Tartar, we understand, is to touch at Sa
vannah for the purpose of receiving a further

The packet ship Albion, winch arrived yes-
day, sailed from Liverpool on the 1st January,
Captain Williams has favored the editors of the
Mercantile Advertiser with papers to that date*
bud London ilptes to that of the 30th December,
both inclusive. We have also received Lloyd's
List of the 24th and 28th December,
The papers contain no political news.
The House of Lords have passed a bill
laying a duty, the same as is now paid on
newspapers, on all pamphlets, with a view
to check the circulation of seditious writ-
lugs.

“In the course nf this month our Cotton
market haa undergone no material fluctu
ation: the demand in the early pari of it
tv«. very moderate, latterly it has been
improved and steady. Brazils having
been offering nn cheaper terms, have at
tracted the most attention. American
coflnns have also met with a fair demand,
and of Sea Islands the sales by auction
have been considerable. There having
been, however, a disposition to sell freely,
prices have not been fully maintained, ex
cept of Sea Island; the ordinary of Up-

The English ship Demuraru, M'Clure, master,
from Demarara to Liverpool, with a valuable
cargo, struck on the rocks near Baimow, Ireland,
and immediately went to pieces; total loss, and
cargo nearly so; and w hat is lamentable, the
whole of the crew were drowned—20 of the
bodies were found and interred in one grave
the following day. Two other bodies were dri
ven on shore the 29tli Dec.

a Negro Man named ^OE. He in about 5
feet 6 inches high; limps wilfii he walks having
sprained his uncle. He is well known in Savan
nah and in the country generally, having been
accustomed to drive a waggqn and working as
a laborer. He formerly belonged to Robt- W.
Pooler, Esq. of this place. The above reward
and all reasonable charges will be paid by lodg
ing him in the gaol of Cnatlnym county.
