1 Business,—It was lust evening remark

habitants, that at no former period had
he seen a greater bustle on our wharves
than yesterday. The loading and unload
ing of vessel.-, exhibited an uulonked for
scene at a time ol commercial stagnation.
This novelty may he accounted for by
the numerous arrivals, and the loading of
many vessels for foreign ports, besides
the usual number of coasters.. At least
twenty vessels are loading for Europe.
Yesterday afternoon, at the last of the

A gentleman at New slip took the oppor

east pier at New slip to the pier mi the
east side of Old Ferry slip, Brooklyn, the
distance was eighteen numbed and se

AN EXPERIMENT.
A musician of considerable humor, piny
ing on the piano at a concert, was much
annoyed by an ancient amateur, who to
observe his execution, or read his music
minutely, leant over him, and almost
thrust his nose into his face. Tn get rid
of this nuisance the player hastily drew
out his handkerchief, ami took hold of his
neighbor’s nose as if to blow it; and tlu'ri
as if discovering his mistake, exclaimed.
“I ask a thousand pardons; your nose was
so near my eves, that I really took it for

***At a meeting of the Joint
Coinniittei* for distribution ol monies collected
for the relifcf of the d’stressed suficats by the
lute fire, Savannah, Februaiy 24th, 1820.
'I’lie Board took into consideration the lint
of applications for relief, and the amount of
losses, whereupon it was resolved, tlr.it the fol
lowing claims be rejected, a« not falliitg within
the province of the charitlible fund entrusted to
this Board, to be distributed umougut llic dis
tressed sufferers by the late fire.
[Li:,t entered on the Minutes.]
Resolved, That the said rejected list be en
tered on the Minutes for the information of all
concerned, with leave tn either of the claim-
ants, to make explanation* as to his or her cir-
cumstances and to adduce proof therfon, to
enable this Committee to reconsider the rejec
tion now made, if this be applied for, on or be
fore the 2d day of March neJct.
Extract from the Minutes,
AUGUSTUS DOUSSET, SecVy.
Many of the applications before the Joint
Committee have been rejected for un entire
want ot evidence and formality, which might
have been avoided by proper attention to the
rule heretofore recommended: if this be wil
fully neglected, it is but natural to suppose that
the person applying is indifferent about relief,
and not an object ot the fund at the distribution
of this Board. It is therefore, again, and for the
last time recommended, that incapacity to bear
the loss, and the state and circumstances of the
person applying, (where not known to some of
the members) must appear, by actual affidavit
or collateral evidence: otherwise, persons may
ultimately complain of the amount allotted,
which would have been different, had proper
and common precaution been taken. Many *n-
phcanls, no doubt, fully entitled to the atten
tion of tile- Hoard, are strangers to them, und
must attend to their own interest, and not im
pose upon the members, the necessity ofdccid*
’."S. unsatisfactorily to themselves, or seeking
tor information from others, for the justification
of their votes.
