BIACICWOOD'S
Edinburgh Magazine.
I N announcing their intention of republish
ing the above work in the United States,
the Publishers can only express their surprise
that eoaic Hookseller of extensive connexions
lias not long ago occupied the ground. 'The
The reisons no doubt may be found in the ge
neral depression of trade, and the difficulty of
collecting small sums through a widely scatter
ed population: still, that a work of such decided
talent, «nd various literature, should have reach-
ed Its thirtieth number without an edition being
demanded, argues at least that its great merit
is known but to a very few, or that llie previous
fate of Periodical M’orks in our country has
operated effectually against the undertaking.
Notwithstanding the foregoing consideration*,
the Publisher* have determined to solicit pub
lic patronage. If successful, they will endcuyor
to show, by the manner in which the mechani
cal part shall he executed, that they have de
served it; if not, they shall quit their object
with regret, that so distinguished a Production
should remain unknown to the mass of thtir
countryniun. (They trust, however, that by
perseverance fieir end will be obtained, and on
that ground tlley make the attempt.
Bi.aikwoohIn Maoaxink may he considered
as having conjnienced a new era In Miscellane

general candi I, boh! and independent. Against
the partial, a d often malignant criticism of the
Northern Re' ew’drs it has more than once en
tered its solci >ii protest Indeed, it seems al
most the only work which ha* Imd the power of
disturbing III/ repose, and of exciting the unx
iety of those/Selt-erecteU literary umpires. It
is evident tli/t they frequently writhe imder.tlie
severity of ip sarcasm, and that in future they
must not.'elpect to inflict wounds upon tin-
offending taJent and virtuous prii ciple with im
punity., It f» at once the friend of unassuming
genius, aiuy the intrepid, defender of high ac-
quireinent/yet it treats with \ u lnotis indigna
tion those, who, with talents df the first ordei,
devote tlKfm to the busiot of purposes.
The F.^ays and other Communications in
this Work .are upon the most interesting sub
jects. Tley exhibit deep thought, extensive
research, liud no ordinary degree of learning.
Their puHty of style, ;in«l dominion over onr
language^ are equal to any production of the
age. 'There is scarcely a subject of any impbvt-
mice which is not touched with a master’s hand.
Their knowledge of the literary circle which
directs and controls tjte metropolis of Scotland
is aB-accurate as it is universal; nor can any si
milar work he pointed to, from which so much
can he h al lied, on the > avious subjects of litera
ture, morals, and the habits of intellectual soci
ety, as JilackwooiCs Eilinburgh Magazine.
CONDITIONS.
'The work will be published monthly, fifteen
