SAVANNAH:
THURSDAY MORNING, JUNE 21, 1821.
to THE PATRONS OP THUS GEORGIAN.
ET* 'The suhsn iber having purchased
Ibe interest of Mr Finn in the OFFICE OF
Tfdtt GEORGIAN, will hereafter conduct the
«diffi»rial department, and continue the publi-
cation, on hit own individual account.
GEO. ROBERTSON, JR.
In taking possession of the Office of the
Georgian, the editor thinks proper briefly to re
mark, that it will be his endeavor to maintain
the dignified character, which the publication
bus hitherto sustained. To the interests of hil
native state, it will always be his object to con-
duce ; and if industry and application, in pro*
curing the latest political and commercial in
telligence have a claim upon the public, he an
ticipates a continuance of the liberal patronage
which has hitherto been bestowed upon the es
tablishment. To our advertising friends we
V)ave to remark, that their favors will always re-
c^kc fi-at attention and a conspicuous insertion;
fowto them particularly we look for the most
essential support which can be afforded to so
ephepierat a publication as a daily newspaper.
In resigning the editorial duties of the Geor.
•ian, to the hands of Mr George Robertson,
1 feel assured, that if the paper has acquired
•uv additional celebrity during that period, his
ability and professional knowledge will advance
ii in the estimation of its Patrons. Grateful for
the encouragement which has been extended it,
I have taken this opportunity briefly, but sin
cerely to express it,
HENRY JAMES FINN.
The .Market for the patt Ifeek.—Sea Islands
15 a 3lJ; upland 14 a 17; Rice, ‘l 50 a $3. The
great dearth of money has had an effect on the
demand for produce of every kind; and although
• few parcels of uplands have reached our high
est quotations, yet second qualities cannot be
•Old at prices which were freely given the pre
ceding week. In sea islands, nothing lias been
The jealousies which have existed among the
leaders of the Patriot forces, and which have
had the effect of injuring the cause of the whole
by the bad conduct of a few, may prevent them
from arriving at the consummation so devoutly
wished by the friends of freedom in every part
of the world, #o soon as might be desired. That
they will emancipate themselves, is certain, and
if they do. that they will become great us a na
tion, under ^republican form of government,
is not to he (hubted. When the fever of revo
lution, and t^e rancor of party teuds have sub
tided, they vflll have time to encourage indus
try and promote the interests of agriculture and
commerce. Our government has hitherto ob
served a strict neutrality, and kept aloof from
interfering hi the cauae of either of the parties,
with a prudence and caution highly commends
ble, whilsMhe reBultof the contest was in any
way doubtfiil. But in our humble opinion, that
forbearance is no longer necessary. It it now
nearly reduced to a certainty, that the Patriots
must succeed. The government of South Ame
rica will look upon that nation which first ac
knowledges their independence, and admits
them into a fellowship with it, more favorably
than upon those who still consider them in the
light of “Insurgents;” and will no doubt be dis*
posed to grant commercial privileges to it
which wni be denied to others. Our rivals in
commerce, the British (for in trade we shall al
ways be rivals) will no doubt endeavor, by every
tneans in their power, to secure the lucrative
trade of South America to themselves; and un
less our government acts promptly, may be en
abled, if not to exclude us wholly Crom it, at
least to injure our interests very materially, by
obtaining privileges which we do not enjoy.—
It is, therefore, our interest, as well as policy,
to be on the alert, und-to take advantage of the
first favorable oppofthnity to acknowledge
them on the footing of an independent and so
vereign people. We shall thus secure to our
selves the commerce of this richest portion of
the habitable globe; and deserve the gratitude
with which a people who have so long and so
faithfully struggled in a cause consecrated to us
by the blood of the heroes of our own revolu
tion, will regard the government foremost in
the acknowledgment uf their claims. As the
duly purely republican government on earth,
we are in a maimer bound to be the first in this
acknowledgment; and when to duty, the claims
of congeniality of situation and sentiment, and
(he powerful inducement of self interest are
added, we cannot possibly see any sufficient
reason for delaying this act of justice to a rising
people.
From X Mr. Te ;\do, passenger in the
recently done; holders, however, still ask the barque packet, Captain Foot, from Havana and
psiaef of live preceding week. Rice ia also of 1
dull sale, but stock limited. Corn is retailing
»t 87\ a 100, and although it is bought sparingly,
and only for immediate and absolute wants,
there is little probability the market will at this
late period of the 9eason, be 9o well supplied as
to occasion a reduction of price, which will not
leave a handsome return to the importer.
By Captain Chevalier, from St. Maryi, We
J^arn, that the U. S. troops for St. Augustine,
left that port on the 16th, in a transport, in com-
J>any with the St. Marys revenue cutter and the
schooner Porpoise
Wealth of the Mexican Church.—The Aurora
informs us, that the church-lands in Mexico are
valued at 844,500,000, and that the tithes of the
agricultural produce of the country, amount to
$2,900,000 a year.
Self-Murderers.—On the 26th ult. in Halifax,
JI. C. Edward Crowelland 7*. W. Crowell, (fa
ther and son,) put a period to their earthly ex.
istence : the father by shooting himself, and the
pon by cutting his throat. They were both men
of good character, and in vety easy circum-
glances.
The following *a propot, 9 is taken from a late
gnglish Sporting 'Magazine, and appear to
have been written in anticipation of Kean's
catastrophe at Boston.
“Kean is accused, that is certain,
Of acting ill—behind the curtain;
But let's forgive him, I implore
He never acted ill before it.".
A'Xew Crusade f— Several Sears have re
cently made dieir appearnnee in Dennysville,
Maine, and destroyed ten head-of cattle. The
inhabitants, it is said, have entered into an un-
holy alliance and have turned out en masse, for
the purpose of giving them battle. Query, may
not this detachment of the legitimate subjects of
Doctor Mitchell's friend, the Emperor of Rus
sia, be sent for the purpose of regulating the
new constitution of Maine in the absence of
Gov. King, a la mode de Naples ?
GOODS COASTWISE. .
Caution again a— All goods, subject to ah ad
valorem duty, sent coastwise in original pack,
ages of importation, should be accompanied by
a certified copv of the original invoice, and all
•uch goods as have been repacked, with a C. H.
certificate of that fact. Attention to this, at the
port where the goods are shipped, will prevent
much trouble and expense to tKe consignee, as
without such certificates, the goods are detain
ed at the Custom-House until they are pro
duced.
The preceding caution having been given in
hill, over and over again, it. js now particularly
ifecommended to the attention of those who ne-
fter attend to any thiog.

Vera Crux, aOL York, slates, that a battle had
recently been fought at Tepeaca, in that pro
vince, between the Royalist forces, consisting
of 1200 men under the command of Col. Ebia,
and the insurgent troops consisting of4000 men,
under Colonels Heresa and Bravo, in which the
latter were totally defeated; and that it was
fully believed that the insurgents would be
completely subdued in a very short time.
Tne above article appears to be rather too
milch of the co’mplexion of some of the accounts
published by the Royalists, and should be re
ceived with a proper de ree of caution. As to
the belief that the " Insurgents’* will be com
pletely subdued,recent events sufficiently prove
that their cause is placed on too solid a founds
tion to be affected by the “ belief” of their e-
nemies.
Gen. Jackson.—A le^er to the editors of the
Intelligencer, dated Blakely, 7th May, states—
“The people of Pensacola are very impatient
for the change; General Jackson is exTcmcl)
popular among them, which l did not expect to
find the case ; but the reasons which they give
are very sufficient. They say he i6 a man of en
ergy, and at the same time scrupulously just,
had been informed, that he was an extensive
owner of property here, but 1 find that he does
not own a single foot, and that he is engaged in
none of the purchases which have been made
by others. Larg<* purchases have been made by
a gentleman of the same name in Tenesaee, but
no connection of his.
It appears that the assignation nf Willliam
T S.tmth, Esq. solicitor at Trinidad, late of New
York, took place in consequence of a fracas
with a Mr. Tyler, of that place. Mr. S. had ie-
ceived an affront from the latter, and had horse
whipped him. A challenge ensued, but the
meeting was prevented by the civil authority.
Tyler was suspended from his command of en
sign in the militia, in consequence, and soon af
ter, waylaid Mr S. and shot him, when only a
few yards from he house of a friend, to whom
he on that evening had paid a visit.
The Committee appointed by the Legislature
of Massachusetts/ on the subject of Imprison
ment for Debt, have made a report, with the
view of enabling die Debtor who has no proper-

reason, says the Boston Patriot, why an honest
man may nut swear out, as well on the day of
commitment, as at the expiration of thirty days •
we hope it may succeed.

FESTIVAL
OF ST. JOHN THE IIAPTI8T.
Every zealous Mason will belieVt*
that a proper observance of the festivals of th*.
Craft, greatly contributes to the preservation of^'
those social virtues, and affectionate feelings,
which have given such permanency, through
the revolutions of ages, to our inhocent and
much respected institution. These festivals arfi
the greater and the lesser—that of St. Joub
the Evangelist and St. John the Bawtisx -*
The celebration of the former is a matter of
duty ; the latter of discretion and inclination*
It is a festival, however, consecrated by recol
lections calculated to awaken Masonic piety*
and ought, therefore, to be observed by Bre
thren in whose minds every thing is important
that may be connected with the interests of the
Fraternity*
Under these impressions, the Grand Mastef
invites and requests the several Lodges of thi* .
city, (and all Brethren who may find it conve
nient) to meet and associate with the Grand
Lodge, on MONDAY NE*T, (the festival re
gularly occurring on Sunday) the 2Jlh Instant"
at the Grand Lodge Room, at 10 o'clock, A.'ll.
of that day, for the purpose of attending in pro#
cession, divine service, and assisting in other
duties and ceremonies, usual on the occasion!
As the funds of the Grand Lodge cannot (py
appropriated lor the purposes of this festival*
the expenses of Refreshment must be defrayed
by individual contributions. The Banquet will
be regulated by simplicity and economy ; and
brethren desirous of partaking it, will have the
goodness to call upon the Grand Master, the
Grand Treasurer, or Grand Secretary, with
whom subscription papers are deposited. Or
ders for refreshment will entirely depend upon
the number of Subscribers on Wednesday next.
