ST. AUGUSTINE, Dec. 28.
On Sunday last, at 44 P. M.. tho schooner John
McClone, Capt. W. H. Freeman, of Philadelphia,
bound from St. Thomas with a small cargo, sprung
aleak, supposed from parting an after butt, which
(lie course of tin) vessel ripped off, tried to free her
till 2 A M., when finding vessel bad from se
eight feet water in hold, deemed it prudent ti
til tho boats, being on by line a quarter of an bout
when the vessel went down.
At tho Hay's observation the vessel was in 1st. 30
long. 79 C,—no passengers; capture, mate and four
aeamrn were in the boat. After much suffering,
they arrived off Musquito bar on Wednesday moi
ing, and in attempting to land the boat swamped
the breakers nearly a quarter of a mile out. T
nt-ite and captain got to the shore, the four men wc
drowned.
Tim men were two whiles, Junnthan Drske, of
Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, aged 41 yeur*;
and James Chawesworth, of the same place, aged
30 years; and two colored, James Jones, of Pennsyl*
vnnia, aged 45 years; and John Mills, of Lewiston,
Delaware, aged 22 years.
By the guidance of Providence the captair
mate, instead of landing among the Indians, landed
near a fishing hut, protected by the pint of New
Smyrna.
There they received every attention and arrived
here in the schr. Joseph Crowell, on Sunday.
Captain Freeman ha* suffered severely, but is in
