all these ends, what more powerful agent can be cm

The South peculiarly requires such an ngont. In
all tlio Union, south of Washington, there are but two
literary periodicals? Northward of that city, there are
probably at least twenty live or thirty!—Is this contrast
justified by the wealth, the leisure, the native talent,
or the actual litoraty taste, of the Southern people,
compared with those of die Northern? No: for in
wealth, talents nml tn«te. we may justly claim at least
aneqiinlily with our brethren; ami a domestic institu
tion exclusively our own, heyoml uil doubt, affords us,
if we choose, twico the leasure for rcudiug and writing
which they enjoy.
It was from a deep sense of this lijcnl want that tlio
word Southern was engrailed on this periodical; and
not with any design to nourish local prejudices; or to
advocate supposed local interests. Far from any such
thought, it is die editor's fervent wish to sec the North
ami South hound cmiariugjy together forever, in the
siikeu bandit of mutual kindness nml affection. Far
fiom mediating hostility to tlio North, he lifts already
drawn ami lie hopes therefore to draw much of his
choicest matter thence: and happy indeed will licdeem
himself, should his pages, by making each region known
the other better, contribute in any nssenntii degree to
dispr I ihe lowering clouds that now threaten the pence
of both, and to hiiglitcu ami strengthen the sacred tics
offrnicrmd love.
