cleared up to last evening, of 10585 bales, against

Lost week (our review, it will be recollected, ex-
tends through tire two weeks) owing to the appre-
hensiotiof iinnnvigable rivers, and the consequent
prospect of low receipts for tho present, with other
temporary causes prices advanced and a good
deal of spirit was observed in tho market Since
theuwe have received advices from Europe an-
nouncing an improvement both in the foreign de
mand and rates. Tho influence of this news has
been unfavorable to tho activity of our market. It
lias induced holders so to iucrcas.* their rates as to
deter buyers fromcoraing forward and purchasing
freely. To this cause it muy bo added also that
there are at present tio pressing demands for filling
cargoes, or any orders in the market for immediate
execution.
The bulk of the staple now on sale ranges from
ordinary and middling to middling fair—and the
demand for the last few days has been confined al
most entirely to the best qualities in market, most
of which have been bought up. Tho advance claim-/
ed by holders is fully Ic per lb on the rates which*
1 by holders is fully 4c per lb on the rates which4V
obtained two week* ago. The miles since iho 29lh V

rates, there being very littja on sale which brings
10c. The classification, as ticnr as possible, muy
be stated as follow-*, viz:—Fair 9.J a 9j; Middling

Business is improving, and an incensed degreo
ofuctivity is apparent in all departments oftrndc.
Every packet ship, and steamboat, comes freighted
with crowds of strangers and returning citizens,
and our city, once again wears tho aspect of the
great emporium of tho South-West. The quantity
of merchandise arrivingfrom the north isvery con
siderable Mid our drygoods merchants aro begin-
irly or ‘ * '
niug to he particularly ousy.' Itnppeurs to be tho
opinion that a much larger nmount of goods will ho
needed for the interior than has been the case for
several years post.
Tho weather continne.sheautifnl, and it is scarce
ly necessary to add that the healtli of the city is
perfectly good.
The river remains at the same stage as last no
