The Interest on the State Debt of Penntylrenia.—
We have •ecu n letter *a>* the Philadelphia Inqui
rer, from a high source nl Harrisburg, which say*
—It gives us pleasure td slate that the iulorest on
our public debt, due Fob. 1, will bo promptly paid
without recourse to loans. Tho balance in ilio
Trsasurjr this day, (Nor. 30)U IWWft ‘ ,r
which die suui of at least $750,000 is available. The
two heaviest uionllta of the receipts arbyrt to come
Ueroro the interest is payable, and the receipts for
said months, I think may be safely estimated at from
$400,000 to $500,000. I am therefore of opinion,
that the resources of tbo Treasury will not only be
sufficient to pay the interest, hut dial nil the ordina
ry demands of our Government will bo likewise
met.
A Life Sored by Presence oj Mind.—A Caution
and an Example.—The Philnd. U. S. Gazette says
die clothes of a colored servant girl of N. Sargent,
Esq., took lire on .Monday, while she was at work
in a basement kitchen. In an instant she was
wrapped in a Maze, and in this condition, uttering
terrible scream-*, she ran up to the parlor where
Mrs. S. was. Thu sight was appalling, but Mrs.
S. Imd the presence of mind to seize the girl and
throw her on the iloor cloth, which she wrapped
closely rotttid her. In the mean time a daughter,
- the only other person in the house, brought several
buckets of water, with which the fire was extin
guished.
Doth tho colored girl ami Mrs. S. wore badly
burned, aud nothing saved die life of tho former hut
the presence of mind of the Inter. Let those be
.bautious who have to work about a fire when dress
ed in cotton clothes; and let others remember that
the only way to extinguish the flame in such a case
is to Minothe'r it hy wrapping round the person a
voolh n blanket, carpet, floor cloth, or wlmtevcrcan
he most readily obtained that U made of teool.
Tall.—'Tho best thiug wo have sinco old Noah
veldt the dove from the urk in search of dry lund, is
i thaLeent, forth by die editor of the Richmond (Va.)
Compiler, lie says the time "used to was” when
«*« fffetlemnn wotild step up to the bar and call for
«"***whUkoy straight.” Now the •'agony” is to re
quire a glass of tho “extract of coni per *e.”—Pie.
It is rumored that President I/imnr will he a
candidate for the office of Major General of tho
Militia ofTuxas, a post recently resigned by Gen.
Felix Huston.
