Iwro that if Cel. Hays met with no opposition at

but I Invo recently learned that he was ordered to
report himself at Cumnrgo after leaving Victoria.
Some person* arc still of opinion here, that lie will
go on without reporting nt Cumnrgo, but I do nut
believe it. Alilunigh his men will urgo him to dis
obey the order still I believe he Ins too much re
spect fur the service to heed them.
Whatever force reaches Monterey first, will, in
my opinion, have little difficulty in entering the
place. Notwithstanding the continual report* of
the cooceiitralion of tlm enemy's foiccs (hero, I
incline tn the belief that not n life will be lost in
taking the place. The few troops there, at (ho last
reliable accounts—not over 800—have, no doubt,
left fur Saltillo long aincu, and ou this side of the
iiiouiiinitis, I do not believe Gen. AJejia could raise
1000 men, if tlmt number.

that tho news of their approach reached the place

were no littlo ulnrtucd about their person* and
property. Early in the morning of the day on
winch they arrived, the house* were nearly all
closed up nud the inmates assembled in their differ
out court yard*. Tlm noiseless manner in which
the hoy* entered took them all by hiiiprise, 0 d
they were in the very centre of the town before
one-third of the people knew they had entered itat
all. They Imvu become so accustomed to the
fifii*t* from tlm shrill trumpet* uf the Mexican cav

The third regiment of Indiana volunteers have
