an appropriation of $50,009 for the removal of
the wrecks in the Savannah River has been lost
by his inefficiency, and the prospect of ohtaiuiug
it hereafter line been lessened hy tlio policy lio line
pursued. Those arc questions in which tho peo
ple of th • District nt large lire interested. I bog
to call your attention to a mnttor iu which you nro
moro immediately, and particularly the Mechan
ic* of this oily, interested. I muon tlio construc
tion of a Custom House. You will recollect that
before Mr. King took his'seat iu Congress, hy
llm efforts ofthe then members, the sum of $30-
000 xvus appropriated for the construction of a
Custom llomto in this city. To carry out the
object of this appropriation,a lot was purchased
in a central part of tho city, and a plan for n Cus
tom House made out. Such plan was necessa
rily limited to the menus provided for ila accom
plishment. These were au inadequate, it was
thought advisable to apply to the Secretary of the
Treasury to poitpouo tho construction of tho
building, to afford time to Congress at its recent
scMion, to incrcnse tlio appropriation, and at the
saute time while enlarging the huitdiug to afibrd
room for the session in it of the Federal Courts.
To effect Ihia object an application was made to
the Secretary of tlta Treasury to postpone all
present action. To this, that officer cheerfully
acceded. Well, the session has pussed and not a
solitary movement hna been made, ns far as I
know. Cortain it ia that no nppropriuffon lias
bean received, While Boston and Washington
Custom Houses have had additional appropria
tions, none hna been made Ibr Savannah.

Has Mr. King, our immediate representative,
done any ihiug in thi* mutter? lfhehas, whnt
has ho accomplished ? It was bis business to have
represented to the Secretary of tho Treasury the
fact; llint wo liava in our city Mechanics equal to
the erection of this oraiiy other building. Jio
should, os'nur representative, have protested a*
gainst tlii* importation of Mechanics from abroad.
Can the’ Secretary of the Treasury be blamed for
this, when onr representative on tho spot is silent
and acquiesco* in tint measure ? The reason and
jtutico of tho Ihiug are so plum, that occupying
the position Mr. King did, if be possessed thut in
fluence which ovury mouther of character and a-
bility must necessarily possess (whatever ha liis
politics) in a mere local matter, his inturpositiou
must liava bean succosiful. Perhaps this was too
small a matter to ongago tho attention of Mr
King, an it wus absorbed in tho weightier matters
of tho great universal Whig party. I suppose*
however, although ho forgets them. Mr. King will
