The Triixton struck otr tho bar near Tiix*
pnn on tlm availing of 14lh Aujjiui, and Liout.
Berryitmit was at unco despatched in an open
boat,.by Commander Carpeuder 1 or asiisinnco.
He sncecodud in reaching the squudron ou tho lllth
and roporlnd to Cum Connor.
Ou tlm lGdi a small vessel wax seen standing tn
tho port ufTuxpnn, and Lieut. Hunter, with iiino
nmn, procoudcd in the, cutter to take possession
of her. .They fqrcc^l their way through iha break-
era. and captured llm vesptd, .which proved to he
a Mexican schooner, with, thirteen persons on
hoard. After an uusiiereMfut attempt to board
tlm Triixton, Liai|t. Iluuter anchored nstern nf
tho brig. On the morning of llm 17th the brig
h> inted a flag of mice, lowered nut llio dingey
with a sail haUenod over tier, and oust Imr adrift.
Tlm current carriod Imr through Iho breakers,
ami Limmnnnt Hunter took possession of her.—
Sho contained some article* of pr>tvision*. nnd n
Inter in him from Commander Carpender, in tlm
following word*:
‘J Itnvo resolved to surrender the brig, nnd yon ,
are nt liberty to use your di-cretion about going
in. I shall ask to have assistance sent to you im
mediately.
E. W. CARPENDEIl."
Thus left to his di<crntioti, Liout. Hunter re
duced the number of his prisoners, hy sending
nine nf them ashore tn the cutter, and made sail
for Vora Cruz. Ou tho oveningof the 19th, a ves
sel came in eight, which Im determined to board.
Hu put liia prisaniihi below, and lea ingtwn mon
to guard thoiu, gave chase to hnrin llm dingey,
with woven men. Aftura long chase, ho captured
Imr. Sim proved lo he a Mexican xchooncr load
ed with Indian corn, hound to Vora Cruz, ami
having a crow or live persons. On board ofllda
schooner, ho retained five of his mon, and placed
tho remainder on hoard the first prize with llio
directions to sail for Green island. The voml-Ib
wore separated nt night hy a squall, On tlm21st
he gave up hi» schooner to Liout. Sinclair in the
“Flirt," nnd on llm next day roportod to Com
modore Conner. Thoother prize was delivered
over tn tlm United Stale* hrig "Sumer*," nnd the
crew reached the "Cumberland" on tlm 23d.
By hi* energy nnd discretian, Lieut Uituter
thus succeeded not only in saving himself and craw
with Ihe first prizo, hut also in capturing, with her
cargo and crew, a second schoouor belonging to
Hm Alexionns. What coil’d he more spirilednnd
firm than this chivalrous conduct ofLicut. Hunter?
It is a 'oat upon a small scale, indeed; but it en
nobles the navy ; for the same energy which per
forms such a bold achievement is competent tn
accomplish brilliant deeds upon a much larger
scale. One of tlm finest, and yet most modest
sentiments which wax ever uttered at the festive
board, was the toast of Commodore Decatur, nt a
dinner given to him in Philadelphia, after one of
hi* xplendid victorias. When his name was toast
ed, Ire modestly disclaimed any extraordinary
merit fur what Ire had done) declared there were
hundreds in the service who could have done na
much or more, and Hint his only advantage was in
having the opportunity tn do it. He wnulddrink.
therefore, to all his brother officer* in the navy:
"OrroRTimtTr.”
Tho English contemplate arraying an electric
telegraph across the British channel, so os to com
municate between London and Paris. As a pre
paratory movement to this grand end, experiments
have been made recrttly at thn Dock Yard, Purls
mouth, under llio directions of the Lords of th •
Admiralty, the Wire* btinft xb»k in the water, and
Hm communication being made to traverse their
whulo length, from the deck of the ship Blnkn to
the adjacent ahoro. The index used most aotisfac-
torily, tested the capabilities of the iuveo'inn*
which was constructed for Ihe conveyance of sig
nals for short distances. A writer in the Sunday
Despatch says, the signals were as prdmptly shown
by tho index, as if transmitted from the duck to the
engine room below, proving beyond doubt, the
practical success of this mode of conveying intelli
gaucQ even across the seat for observe, Um signals
Wore Conveyed from one side of the harbour to tlm
other. Tiio conclusion that the experimenters
have come in is this: that intelligence may be car
ried with equal ftcility from headland to headland,
wlmro it cannot be iatorfered with by the onchors
of vessels; and thus, between Grunt Britain and
Frauen, or any other countries which ure only
sopnraicd by sea—space is annihilated.
