The two comnnnies of Texas Rangers, under
Captains McCulloch and Gillespie, returned last
eveuiit* from a scouting tour in the direction of
Monterey, and brought back more full information
of the enemy than has been heretofore received.—
Captain Meade, of the Topographical Engineers,
accompanied the Rangers, having been sent out
hy Gen. Worth to examine the roads.
Tho purty started from here ou Friday afternoon,
without pack limlas or hnggagn nf any kind, and
with only three days'provisions. Before sundown,

A little further on, about I o'clock ill the morning,

Tho editor of the Republican charges M r.Cohen
with ignorance of the " tendencies" of his parly.
The above extracts show that Mr. C. doe* not
stand alone iu tho opinion he has expressed ou the
subject oEdirect taxation. 1 think .Mr C is safer
ill preferring that his knowledge of the political
history of parlies should be sustained hy Messrs.
Berrien and Toombs, Ilian cither by Mr. King nr
the editor of the Republican.
Air. Cohen has canso to complain of the Editor
of the Rupnhlicnn. who well knowing tho use of
itali'-s, has quoted from Mr. C's address, and itali
cised words not italicised hy him. and failed lo put
italics wlmro Mr. C. had placed them.
Air. C. stated that •'no party in this country had

Has any parly in this country advocated or

Even according to the Editor’* showing "only

I prefer believing with Afr. Toombs, that tho
propriety of raising rcVcnua by any other means
than that nf dutios on imports "is not directly dis-
putod hy any body of men, sufficiently large lo
havenltractud general attention."
Again, " those who regard themselves ns parti
cularly interested in the Tariff of 1812," certainly
constitute a "large friction of the Whig Party;"
and yet Mr. King tells u* that they '• would prefer
war to a system uf Free Trade." (See his Oregon
speech, p 15.)
Does Air. King agree with them?
I do not believo that Air. Culieu has ever euden-
>red tn persuade the people that he wns “a loi
ter Whig Ilian Mr. King.” In his speeches, Mr
Cohen did pre-sthe fact thut Air. King'* veto on
the Internal Improvement Bill, nnd his prrstnl
opinion* ou ilia protective policy, were not in ac
cordance with the opinion* of the Georgia Whigs
i formerly proclaimed.
The Editor nftlie Republican cannot ever lirtre
consulted the file* of his paper, nnlerior lo his tak
ing chtrge of it, clso he would havo preferred to
have lot this subject romain in aboynnro.
