The Delta of the 4th in-t. pays:—Tho number
of deaths still increases. For the 24 hours prece
ding oine o'clock yesterd *y, there were 77 vie
lira*. We hear of a great increase of cases dur
ing the prevalence of (lie cold Northern winds, for
the Isst two or three days. There are soveral
physicians who have lived a long time in the city
taken down with the f.ver, and many eitixens
who passed aafely through former epidemics ire
now snfioring from severe alia ks of this strange
and fatal disease. We trnsi no stranger* will
come into tho rily during the prevalsucs of the
fever.
Wilb its present headway and an atmosphere
so favorable to its inerea»e, nothing can stay the
onward coarse of the epidemic but the sxlnustion
of material for it to operate on. If on icclimated
persons will come into the city and supply it with
new subjects there will be no abatement ofiu rav-
ges until it is nipped and extingubhed by frost.—
If it is to continue, at this early stage cf the sea
son. tn i tcre&sssl the rate it now is, our city will
will bt decimated by the 1st November.

this! how full of meaning, and yet how non'
compronutial! How well calculated to lead poor
unsophisticated individuals like ourselves into tho
idem that our n *ighbors not only insinuate, but es<
tert, tha Mr Polk bargained with Santa A (the in
reference to the war I Aud yet the Republican
stye, that it "asserted no such thing, and the
Georgian, with the extract before it, attributes tn
ns langosge which we never wrote." Our utigh<
bote are e little too fast! Wo have attributed to
them no particular language whatever. We have
one idea of wh-it an assertion U—oar neighbors
seem to cherish soother. We leive it to the pub
lic to deLnnine, by a perusal of their own re
marks, which is correct, and whether logicians are
entitled to any confidence whatever, who always
take earo to leave loop-holes in the arguments
they use. through which they can crawl, to escape
the deatending bludgeon of truth.
Iu their editorial of Tuesday, our neighbors, as
usaJ, fly off from the issues made by themselves,
and pour nut a perfect ocean of" talk** on matters
and things iu gsnor-l connected with the war.
Their fir.t assumption wea, that ‘-tha demagogues,
the wire pullers, aud the small potato po iticmia
at Washington, deprived (Gan. T*ylur) of the
gallant baud who had bitn tha companion! of his
toils aud the participators of his vtc'ori#*," and
that this was the reason why he had been detained
at Monterey for a year. By n calm statement of
facts we showed that G«u. Taylor hi oavlf had
ecrvU out the force wlfffcb was to bo left iu charge
of the Northern line of operation*, that be did not
design it to advance further toward* San Lois that
ho was thrown himself into tho posit on which he
bad designed for Gen Butler, by tho arrival uf the
Commander-ia cbLf of the army. Do oar neigh-

No! Failing iu thu, do they retract the ebargo it-
odf as hauls** and unfounded I No! But they
fly off through that t oundlese firmacneut of vague
and foggy abuse against, the administration which
is the chosen hosvsn of Fedeiel wing*, and collect
together *• raw material" enough to supply the
mills of truth for the entire season. Their "raw
to iteriai" is decidedly of tbe shortest staple, tn
tbe mean lima "the demagogues, the wire pullvrs,
tod the small potato polittcunt" al Washington
are permitted to draw & long breath, aud feel
easy, until our neighbors, in some future fli.ht
through tbe universe, see proper tn swoop down
upon them again. We strive to bring them back
to tho roerr. We will not do it however by
losing our temper or using hard words. We will
not s>y. that unless onr neighbours ent.ibli-h or
withdraw their charge, they ore guilty of "a false
and slanderous attack."- Smli words wo lease
to thedUcnmGted champion* ofvrror, where thoy

eboat(ifit did not design) to "l«:ove lbs w hole val

at the mercy nf Santa Anna." We replied to this
that Monterey was regarded a* the strong pot it in
defence of that valley, the "eet" of th'.t vnllty;
that Geu. Taylor had instructed Gen. Under to
fall back npon it iu ease of emergency ; Hist Gen.

Translated from the Diario Official del Gnbierno.
On the 50ih August Scott’s troops, who inten-

near l aeubeye. As soon as the news was known
at .flexico, Vsleucia’a division went out to attack
the :\ui**rie«n>at Los UnnuH do Sant Angel, and
was completely rooted. Next cjiite Santa Anna,
with another division, which shared the same fate
after somei fighting. Tho Mexicans retreated tu
the capital in greet disorder, and snch was the pan
ic created by their defeat that the Minister of For

Such are tbe meagre details which wo have of
these important events. No courier* from Gen.
Scott’s army direct hive been able to gel through,
so far os wo can learn. But from thu foregoing
•taieuients it is manifest that Gen. Scott hoi u
the city of Mexico et his command. That Gen
Scott did not choose to enter the city i« manifest,
lie. was doubtless deterred from entering it by a
desire to save tbo pride of the .Mexicans when
upon tbe eve of important negotiation*. It is
now supposed that the exireordinury courier
which left Vera Crua fur Mexico on tho 12th nit.,
a day in advance of the regular EnglUh Conner,
was the bearer of instructions to the British min
ister to offer again bis modiatton; and we think
we rasy safely say that he was tn<tructed to do re
if possible before Geu. Scott entered the capital.
We belie re the instructions were positive, and no
doubt they were oboyed. Having absolute con
fidence in this lepretcniaiton of the acts of the
English Government, we think it rcasotnble t*
sappo«e that Gen. Scott w«s iufluvuced bv a
knowledge of this mcd'atiou to trust sgun tn'ihr
efforts of Mr. Trist to negotiste a p-ace. and *o
spared the Mexicans tho humiliation nf the armed
occupation of their capital. Hischiricterislic hu

influenced him to s-ivo Mexico from the violence
of a hostile occupation.

Saturday. lh*h 14th in*!, and on Sunday held a
tivlk with Capt. Grumbles. Santa Anna stated
that the reason of his leaving his hunting grounds
in the manner he did, was a fear that the Ameri

was led to this b.eliofby tbe appearance at Freder

were recently ported in that vicinity. He knew
that the Americans suvpectad his tribe of having
taken or killed the four men of Hays' party some

in case that there ahould be any iraahla with the

Ho informed C*pt. Grumbles that the four m n of
the stirreying party were taken, and subsequently
